DESCRIPTION
The Office of Councilwoman Suely Saro is looking for a highly motivated individual to join the District 6 team as the Legislative Deputy (Legislative Assistant).
The role of the Legislative Deputy is to assist the Councilmember and Chief of Staff with policy and legislative-related items. Under the direction of the Chief of Staff, the Legislative Deputy will remain updated on all city council agenda items, Councilmember policy priority areas, and recent legislation on the local, regional, state, and federal levels. Keep an eye on the pulse of local, regional, state, and federal governments. The Legislative Deputy is to support office operations and communications, assist with casework, and attend meetings and events with and on behalf of the Councilwoman.
As a Legislative Deputy, you will effectively navigate the legislative process and advocate for constituents' interests. You will utilize strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about government, policy, and public service. Furthermore, as needed, you will work with the team on exciting community-related projects.

Councilwoman Dr. Saro was elected to the Long Beach City Council in November 2020 and sworn in on December 15, 2020, as the Sixth District representative. She is committed to strengthening neighborhoods and businesses to uplift the quality of life for residents and communities to thrive. The district includes the central portion of the city, encompassing neighborhoods such as Cambodia Town, Martin Luther King Park, Poly High School, and Memorial Hospital. Councilwoman Dr. Saro is the Chair of the Mobility, Ports and Infrastructure Committee. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assist with research on all Councilmember priority areas, inclusive of each side of the issue, policy, and/or legislation
- Assistance in drafting Council letters, Council agenda item requests, talking points, and other communications materials.
- Attend briefings along with Councilmember and Chief of Staff with all city departments
- Development and maintenance of effective relationships with all City of Long Beach departments and council offices
- Development and maintenance of relationships with other local, regional, state, and federal officials
- Attend city council meetings
- Meet with Councilmember and Chief of Staff on a weekly basis to discuss all legislative and policy related issues that are relevant to the city of Long Beach
- Keep an up-to-date record on all legislative and policy issues that are relevant to the city of Long Beach
- Scheduling and calendaring meetings on all policy related issues
- View and track constituent and stakeholder calls and emails relating to legislative policy items.
- Assist with coordinating district events and large mobilization.
- Assist as needed with resident casework.
- Attend meetings and events with and on behalf of the Councilmember
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE

- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university OR 4 years of equivalent experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communications
- Flexibility to work weekends and evenings as needed.

- Retirement: California Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) defined benefit retirement plan, which is coordinated with Social Security. The benefit is 2.5% @55 for "Classic" members and 2%@62 for new members as defined by PEPRA. Subject to employee contribution. Both the City and the employee contributes toward CalPERS retirement contributions. The city also participates in Social Security.
- Health and Dental Insurance: The City offers the choice of HMO and PPO plans. The city pays major portion of the premium for employee and dependents depending on the health/ dental plan selected.
- Life Insurance: City-paid term life insurance policy equal to three (3) times annual salary to a maximum of $500,000.
- Disability Insurance: City-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance.
- Management Physical: Annual City-paid physical examination.
- Vacation: Twelve (12) vacation days after the first year of service; 15 days after four years, six months of service; 20 days after 19 years, six months of service.
- Executive Leave: Forty (40) hours Executive Leave per year. The City Manager has discretion to grant an additional 40 hours each year.
- Sick Leave: One day earned per month; unlimited accumulation; conversion upon retirement to cash credit toward health and/or dental insurance premiums, or to pension credits.
- Holidays: Eleven (11) designated holidays per year, plus four personal holidays to be used at the employee's discretion.
- Transportation Allowance: $450 per month.
- Deferred Compensation Plan: Optional for employee contribution to a supplementary retirement savings program available through Mission Square Retirement formerly ICMA-RC Retirement Corporation). City contributes 1% of employee's base pay to the employee's 401(a) plan; effective September 30, 2022, the City will contribute 2% of employee's base pay to the employee's 401(a) account. Employees may opt to contribute up to the IRS annual limits as well.
- Flexible Spending Account (FSA): Optional election for employees to reduce taxable income for payment of allowable childcare or medical expenses.
- Flexible/Hybrid Work Schedule: Available (subject to City Manager approval).
- Paid Parental Leave: After six (6) months of City employment; up to 30 calendar days (160 hours) of PPL, taken in full-day increments, in connection with the birth, adoption, or foster placement of a child, up to the age of seventeen (17).
