The Planning Board works in an advisory role to provide recommendations to the Baltimore County Council, County Executive, and Administrative Law Judges - as established by the County Charter, County Code, Council Bills/Resolutions, and/or by Executive Order - on matters affecting land use, community development, and short- and long-range planning within Baltimore County. Members assist in planning for the future development and growth of the County, make recommendations on land use, community plans, the Master Plan, zoning changes, Development Regulations and Standards, the Capital Budget and five-year Capital Program, Water and Sewer Master Plan amendments, and other mandated plans and planning documents. Members of the Planning Board come from variety of careers and professions and provide different background knowledge and skill sets. These backgrounds include but, are not limited to, experience in law, education/Baltimore County Public Schools, research and data analysis, business, finance, real estate, and more. The 15-member body is comprised of 7 members appointed by individual County Council members, and 8 at-large individuals appointed by the County Executive. Members are eligible to receive an annual salary of $15,000; the Chair is eligible to receive a salary of $20,000. In November 2024, County voters will be asked to support a Charter amendment that will require all appointments to be subject to County Council confirmation and to limit the number of terms for Planning Board members. If passed, this will be effective no later than January 1, 2025. Examples of Duties Definition of Responsibility * Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents related to development, short- and long-range planning, land use, and community planning * Ability to serve as a liaison between the public and County government * Ability to attend and participate in board meetings twice a month * Ability to participate in community meetings and events as needed Qualifications Required Qualifications * Interest in improving the quality of life of residents and communities in Baltimore County * General knowledge of, and willingness to learn, concepts and principles of land use planning and development * Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents related to development, short- and long-range planning, land use, and community planning * Ability to serve as a liaison between the public and County government Conditions of Employment Applicants selected for appointment with Baltimore County Government must successfully complete an employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education, and fingerprinting checks.
