Access & Operations Librarian College of Law Library Job Summary The incumbent will perform a wide range of librarian duties, including communication, coordination, and supervisory duties for Access & Operations in a large academic law library environment. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Access & Operations, the incumbent will manage day-to-day operations and play a key role in providing access to the Law Library's collections. Duties & Responsibilities * Leadership and Program Management: * Develop and deliver strategic direction to staff teams in access, circulation, operations, and serials * Develop and lead implementation of best practices and standards relating to access, circulation, and library operations functions in a large academic law library while being aware of peer practices * Direct quality control to ensure consistency in patron service interactions * Plan and lead library physical collection organization, shifting, and maintenance * Participate in teams with library faculty and work independently to provide reference services and library orientations to students, staff, and patrons * Teach instructional workshops and provide technical support for information resources such as bibliographic citation managers, research guides, and library databases * Conduct inventory functions and share updated information with library faculty, the College of Law Assistant Dean for Administration, and others * Coordinate with the College of Law Assistant Dean for Administration to draft and implement emergency plans * Library Process Innovation: * Innovate to improve findability and navigability in the Law Library * Design and maintain faculty scholarship databases for law faculty, monitor scholarly communication H-index scores, and track faculty publications, e.g., Illinois Experts, ORCID, HeinOnline, etc. * Compile and interpret library use statistics for inclusion in reports to the Provost and to national and regional research library organizations. * External Representation and Communication: * Liaise with the University Library to assess and respond to needs and concerns related to circulation, billing, and interlibrary loan * Liaise with University Library, Google, LLMC, and other entities to plan, coordinate, and execute digitization projects for the law library and consortium partners * Work with University Library systems staff to configure circulation functions of the integrated library system and other related systems, including self-checkout software * Represent the Law Library through committees with local, regional, and national partners, including the American Association of Law Libraries and the American Library Association * Be on call for evening and weekend shifts to provide direction in case of an emergency or lack of coverage Physical Demands Walking : Occasionally Stairs : Occasionally Sitting : Frequently Lifting/Carrying : Occasionally Pushing/Pulling : Occasionally Bending/Stooping : Occasionally Kneeling : Occasionally Squatting/Crouching : Occasionally Additional Physical Demands Minimum Qualifications 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the following categories: A. Work experience in a library or equivalent setting. B. College course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table: 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months) Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months) 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months) Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months) 3. A total of two (2) years (24 months) work experience in a library or equivalent setting performing progressively more responsible work consistent with the next lower level of this series. Preferred Qualifications * ALA-accredited master's degree in Library and/or Information Science (or equivalent) * Two or more years of experience in an academic law library setting• Experience working at a customer service point Knowledge, Skills and Abilities * • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and patrons * • Experience assessing and improving workflows * • Demonstrated ability to work with new software and technologies * • Experience providing training or developing training-related documentation * • Knowledge of library circulation and operations functions and processes * • Experience managing confidential customer data * • Demonstrated ability to interpret and ensure compliance with policies * • Experience working with commercial service providers. * • Experience working at a customer service point * • Demonstrated ability to prepare reports and generate documents using Microsoft Excel, Word, or similar productivity software * • Strong written and oral communication skills * • Demonstrated ability to work collegially and collaboratively with others in a team environment. Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 4904 - Library Operations Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 10/1/2024.
