POSITION SUMMARY: This position will be responsible for representing the Detroit Action and Michigan Action political and policy program in our targeted neighborhoods this year ahead of the 2024 elections. The Deputy Field Director will be responsible for managing, training and executing team goals in the upcoming election. The Deputy Field Director will be responsible for training and developing staff members to do community outreach by face to face conversations and digital outreach on current issues in their community, the upcoming elections, voter registration and absentee voting. Additionally, the Deputy Field Director will work collaboratively with the Field Director in creating comprehensive plans around voter engagement through field and digital means in order to ID voters and recruit members for the organization. The Deputy Field Director will have a direct role in an ongoing training program that will teach staff and members how to motivate others toward taking action, learn the history of and challenges facing the social justice movement, and develop a systems-based analysis of the power structures at the local, state, and federal level. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Manage the day-to-day field operations with a focus on recruitment, training and staff development * Track and analyze performance. Troubleshoot and problem-solve. Adjust plans and strategies when necessary * Provide analysis on performance and implement plans to maximize results. * Directly supervise 5 field organizers, and broader team of seasonal canvassers (60-120) * Execute yearly political strategy by working with organizers and senior leadership team on voter engagement, registration and absentee ballot "chasing" * Accurate data collection of candidate and issue IDs during upcoming elections * Engage members in deep conversations around laws, lawmakers, campaigns and other organizational priorities * Help people take action on progressive policy demands by sending letters, emails, making phone calls, signing petitions, attending meetings, etc OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Attend staff meetings, events and actions EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: * High school diploma or equivalent KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Commitment to social and racial justice * Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to organize complex ideas for others to understand * Ability to quickly learn new skills and tools * Ability to handle multiple sensitive assignments in a timely manner. * Be able to think creatively and outside the box * Bilingual in Spanish, Arabic or other languages preferred ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: The Deputy Field Director reports to the Field Director and works collaboratively with staff, contractors, vendors and other partners on a weekly basis to maintain program efficiency. Detroit Action and Michigan Action are projects of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to lift boxes of training materials. Able to attend conferences throughout the United States. Must be able to travel domestically on an airplane 4-8 times a year. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position is a seasonal temporary position through December 2024. Following performance this role may potentially move to permanent. This position is based in an office building in Detroit, MI - The position will be required to work weekends (Saturday and Sunday). The assigned workspace is a cubicle in an open and shared work area with a moderate level of noise and interruptions. About the Organization: Detroit Action and its sister organization, Michigan Action, are hosted projects of Tides Center and Tides Advocacy. We are affiliate partners of the Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) and the Alliance for Youth Action. The successful candidate will receive generous benefits as provided by Tides. The salary will be determined according to a salary scale which takes into account years' experience, location, job category, and other factors, but is expected to be $70,000 annually.
