Postdoctoral Fellow X-ray OAM Beam Based Spectroscopy and Scattering

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Advanced Light Source (ALS) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow X-ray OAM Beam Based Spectroscopy and Scattering who will be responsible for spectroscopy and scattering studies using X-ray Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) beams on quantum material. In this role, you will join a small world-class team conducting coherent X-ray science on quantum materials using soft X-ray-based spectroscopy and scattering techniques. You will study the effect of X-ray vortex beams on ARPES and XAS properties of quantum materials. The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard X-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,500 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft X-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art X-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team! What You Will Do: Perform X-ray absorption and scattering measurements on multiferroics and skyrmion systems using X-ray Orbital Angular Momentum beam. Study the effect of X-ray OAM beams on the ARPES spectra obtained from quantum and 2D materials. Develop toolkits using Python or Matlab to analyze experimental data. Collaborate with other research teams and scientists. Publish original research in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to collaborative publications and writing grants and proposals. Present research through talks and posters at conferences, workshops, and regular group meetings. Contribute positively to the active research culture. Uphold a culture of safety and promote inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability (IDEA) practices in your daily work. What is Required: PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Optics, Chemistry or equivalent. Ability to write codes to reduce and analyze scattering data. Ability to perform independent hands-on work in an experimental endstation. Experience in synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy and/or scattering, or experience in optics, laser spectroscopy. Proficiency in advanced data analysis software such as Origin, MATLAB, or Python-based tools. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven track record of scientific publications. Ability to work effectively in a diverse and multidisciplinary team environment. Desired Qualifications: Experience of X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism, or resonant magnetic scattering. Experience with ARPES. Experience with X-ray zone-plate fabrication. Working knowledge of high vacuum practices. Notes: For full consideration, please apply by September 16, 2024. This is a full-time, 2-year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree. This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes. Postdoctoral Fellow positions are paid on a step schedule per union contract and salaries are predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates. This position has a targeted monthly salary range of $7,716-$8,619 and is expected to start at $7,716 or above. This position may be subject to a background check. Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
