Hours of Work : 40 Days Of Week : 5 Work Shift : Job Description : The Methodist Health System (MHS) Graduate Medical Education (GME) Department provides training, in association and cooperation with its affiliated participating institution, in graduate medical education programs that meet the standards established by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and its Residency Review Committees, American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and the Fellowship Council (FC). Completion of the training generally qualifies the participant for certification by a specialty board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). Eligibility All participants in graduate medical education programs sponsored by MHS GME must meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in the ACGME Institutional Requirements, AOA Institutional Requirements, the FC Institutional Requirements and the Texas Medical Board. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider Certification Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required for all new trainees and must be maintained throughout the duration of your training program. The certificate must include one full year of eligibility Duties and Responsibilities The resident will: * Participate in the clinical evaluation and care of patients in a variety of patient care settings with sufficient frequency to achieve the competencies required by their discipline under the direct supervision of the attending staff. Residents may write orders and progress notes in patient charts, although attending physicians retain responsibility for the care of patients seen by residents and must review the care of their patients. * Perform procedures, which are specified by each program director, under the direct supervision of attending physician. Resident may only perform those procedures for which the attending physician has privileges. Once the resident has performed the appropriate number of procedures in a competent fashion the program director will provide notification that the resident is eligible to be certified to perform the procedure without supervision. * Assume progressive responsibility for patient care activities according to resident's level of education, ability and experience. The program director, the attending staff and the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) will determine the resident's level of responsibility and autonomy. * Communicate effectively with their supervising attending regarding the findings of their evaluation, physical examination, interpretation of diagnostic tests, and intended interventions on a continuous basis. * Participate fully in the educational and scholarly activities of the program and, as required, assume responsibility for teaching and supervising other residents and students. * Participate in appropriate institutional committees and councils whose actions affect their education and/or patient care including, but not limited to quality assurance and quality improvement activities. * Develop a personal program of learning to foster continued professional growth with guidance from the teaching staff. * Abide by all MHS policies and procedures, including the provisions of the GME Policy and Procedure Manual, the residency training programs and the regulations of any affiliated institution to which the resident may be assigned. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to ambulate (may be with use of assisted devices); sit; stand (or accommodate for standing); use hands and vision for physical examination and for teaching/providing treatment; use of office equipment such as computers; speak to large and small groups of individuals for teaching; hear heart sounds; lung sounds and conversation for the care of patients and for the purpose of teaching students how to hear and interpret those sounds; perform moderate telephone and poly-com communication/usage; occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally be required to assist in the movement of patient; drive distances up to four hours or to fly on occasion to clinical sites, depending upon the location of the educational activity. Work Environment: Office, clinical practice, classroom, and laboratory, clinical skills teaching environments and clinical sites constitute working environments. Outside travel may be required up to 15% to 20% of time. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal. The work requires a rapid pace to synthesize and organize large volumes of material, including those skills required for clinical practice and clinical teaching and prioritizing duties.
