Mott MacDonald is a leading provider of dam engineering services with a growing portfolio of projects worldwide. Dam engineering has been a fundamental part of our business since the 1920s when we designed and delivered one of the biggest projects of its day, the heightening of the Aswan dam in Egypt. Throughout our history we have been engaged in the design, construction and maintenance of dams and barrages, from diversion weirs to hydropower dams – as well as associated river engineering, tunnels, and power plants – and have delivered reservoir and hydropower projects in 45 countries worldwide. We have a strong global professional practice network made up of engineers and specialists experienced in dams, irrigation, potable and industrial water supply schemes, hydroelectric generation, mining, flood control and groundwater recharge schemes.
Mott MacDonald is actively growing its dams and levees practice in North America. We are currently seeking a dams and rivers senior engineer for our West USA region. This position will be based at one of our offices in the California Bay Area. You will be tasked with supporting opportunities and project execution of dam-related projects in our water and energy sectors. The position offers great potential for professional growth and the opportunity to collaborate with our water resources, geotechnical, energy and structural professionals on dam and levee-related projects. The qualified candidate must have design and project management experience and ability to build client relationships, support business development and support project execution.
Mott MacDonald has unique on-going projects in design and management of dam and hydropower facilities. We currently are working on a number of pumped storage facilities to provide clean energy supporting the energy transition. Our services include preliminary design related to embankment dams, tunneling operations, mechanical components for power generation and many other aspects. We also are program manager for Valley Water’s Pacheco Reservoir Expansion Project, coordinating engineering and environmental studies, investigations, and design. We are also providing technical reviews of all aspects of the dam facility, including the embankment, spillway, outlet works, water conveyance, stream restoration, and site access. These projects highlight Mott MacDonald’s local dam practice and the exciting, challenging, and important projects we consistently work on.
This position will require interaction with clients and the ability to manage and work with other Mott MacDonald professionals. The role will require support in the coordination of Mott MacDonald’s supporting technical disciplines including water resources, geotechnical, environmental, risk management, structural and permitting services; and, specialty sub-consultants.
Your key responsibilities will include: Complete preliminary and detailed engineering design and associated documents on a variety of dam related projects. Management or support to projects that may include: Dam and/or levee safety related projects including structures within the purview of the DSOD and/or FERC regulations, Geotechnical investigations including test borings, instrumentation systems, and evaluation of monitoring and testing data. Data analysis, organization, and interpretation in support of dam/levee design, and inspection, evaluation, and rehabilitation projects, Geotechnical calculations including seepage and slope stability analyses, toe drain and filter designs, and gravity dam stability analyses Structural investigations and condition assessments Hydraulic and water impoundment and flood routing analysis and spillway modelling and design Construction management Perform preliminary engineering by analyzing data, performing design calculations in accordance with regulatory requirements and guidelines and evaluating options to develop the best solution. Prepare planning and design documents, cost estimates, calculations, project drawings, and technical specifications in coordination with project managers, project engineers, CAD staff and other engineering disciplines. Conform to client and company standards for document and drawing preparation. Conduct internal coordination meetings and provide substantial support for client meetings. Work with team to ensure deliverables are executed with technical accuracy, on-time, and within budget. Ensure formal QA/QC reviews are performed for each project one is responsible for Perform engineering assessments of existing dams and associated facilities Client contact and business development. BS in Civil Engineering is required. Master’s Degree or PhD is a plus. Professional Engineer licensed in CA is required with the ability to obtain a professional engineering license in other states, as required. An ideal candidate will have 10+ years of experience in geotechnical, hydrology, or civil engineering related to the tasks described above. Ability to work well within a project team is required. Direct experience working on projects that involve the Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD) of the California Department of Water Resources and/or Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is a plus. Desired computer skills: Microsoft Office Suite, Autodesk products. Experience with GIS, geotechnical analysis software such as GeoStudio (SEEP/W and SLOPE/W) or Leepfrog Geo, hydraulic analysis software such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS or Flow 3D or structural analysis packages such as LS-DYNA would be a plus. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including technical report writing. Enthusiastic, dependable, self-starter, who is organized and able to work effectively with minimal supervision. Occasional out-of-town travel will be required. Salary Range:
