* Job Type: Officer of Administration * Bargaining Unit: * Regular/Temporary: Temporary * Hours Per Week: 35 * Salary Range: $75,000 - $95,000 The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. Position Summary Reporting to the Faculty Director of the Center for Science and Society (CSS), the Associate Director will be a pivotal contributor to the strategic planning, development, and program management at the CSS. The Associate Director will be responsible for the oversight and execution of these programs and supports the Faculty Director to strategically guide their continued evolution and development. CSS brings together researchers, scholars, and practitioners in the social and natural sciences, humanities, law, medicine, and the arts to engage in interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach to break down traditional disciplinary silos, create a new interdisciplinary paradigm of training and collaboration, and enhance public understanding of science about pressing social concerns. This is a three-year position contingent on funding approval. * Applicants must submit a cover letter along with their resume to be considered for this position.* Responsibilities Finance and Operations * Works closely with the Faculty Director to develop annual and project-related budgets. * Maintains the operational, grant, and gift budgets. * Provides regular financial reports to the Faculty Director and Arts & Sciences (A&S) stakeholders. * Provides budgetary guidance and support to Cluster Leaders, postdoctoral scholars, and grant awardees. * Supervises project staff's day-to-day financial processing and disbursement transactions. * Oversees full operation of the Center, including working with administrative offices in Arts and Sciences, overseeing the purchase and maintenance of furniture, equipment, and facilities, and assisting with space planning, renovations, and improvements to meet operational needs. Grant and Development Portfolio * In coordination with A&S partners, engages in significant fundraising efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Center and its programs. * Works with the Faculty Director to identify grant opportunities. * Develops and writes proposals to support the Center and its programs. * Supports all aspects of the grant application process and provides guidance to faculty and researchers applying for grants through the Center. * Collaborates with Sponsored Projects staff to coordinate and submit government and foundation grant applications. Oversees management and reporting for all external grants awarded to the CSS as well as its faculty and researchers. * Develops and assists in the evaluation of Cluster programming grants, and applications for seed grants, public outreach funds, and curriculum development stipends from faculty and students. Academic Affairs Support Portfolio * Provides support and organizational guidance for the Executive Committee of the CSS and the seven interdisciplinary Research Clusters led by Columbia University's faculty concerning the yearly strategy planning for scholarly and public programming, curriculum and co-curricular development efforts, development and fundraising efforts, and implementation of new media efforts, public outreach, and communications. * Stewards and supports faculty and staff through the long-term process of developing a new curriculum of courses into a new minor and a future major. * Develops a program structured to support the day-to-day needs of postdoctoral scholars housed in the CSS including those of the Presidential Scholars in Society & Neuroscience program. Human Resources Portfolio * Maintains overall responsibility for the human resources processes and compliance obligations of the Center. * In coordination with the A&S Human Resources Office, provides advice and counsel to staff, postdoctoral scholars, and students on HR and related policies and procedures. * Hires, trains, supervises, and supports employees with career development opportunities. Communications * Plans and oversees internal and external communication strategies. * Collects and curates content for presentations as required by the Faculty Director and the University's senior management. * Foster a vibrant and interdisciplinary community of scholars and students in science and society around Columbia University, Barnard College, and the greater New York City area. * Organizes and directs the delivery of internal and external programming events. Minimum Qualifications * Bachelor's Degree and four years of related experience required. Preferred Qualifications * Advanced degree. * Experience working in higher education or non-profit setting. Other Requirements * Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. * Ability to maintain high confidentiality and professionalism with a client focus. * Strong multi-tasking, prioritization, and organization skills. * Attention to detail, research, critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills. * Self-starter, a fast learner who can work independently under limited supervision. * Work well in an interactive team environment. * Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.
