The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (PRCR) mission is     "Together we connect and enrich our community through exceptional experiences." The ideal candidate must be self-motivated and can work alone and as part of a team.  The primary role for this position is to provide crew supervision at the Destination park's four main park locations.  Destination Parks is composed of four parks, including Dix Park, Pullen Park, John Chavis Memorial Park, and the Raleigh Rose Garden. Dix Park is one of the newest parks in the City of Raleigh Parks system and consists of 308 acres currently in the developmental phase.  Dix Park consists of the Greg Poole, Jr. All Faiths Chapel, the Flower Cottage, the Stone Houses and the Gipson Play Plaza, that is tentatively scheduled to open in the spring of 2025. Pullen Park, the first public park in North Carolina established in 1887, is the 5th oldest operating amusement park in the United States.  Sitting on more than 66 rolling acres Pullen Park is comprised of several historic and popular destination sites.   The Raleigh Rose Garden boasts over 1200 roses and 60 varieties with hybrid teas, floribundas, grandifloras, miniatures and antiques.  It is a popular site for weddings and shares the property with the Raleigh Little Theatre and outdoor amphitheater.   John Chavis Memorial Park, located in the heart of downtown, consists of a new central plaza with an integrated water feature, renovated former carousel house, and a large playground for variety of ages and abilities. The existing park amenities also include a historic Herschell carousel, baseball field, outdoor walking track with multipurpose field and 3 picnic shelters. As a Crew Supervisor for Destination parks, the ideal candidate has a passion for public service, can conduct all aspects of horticulture maintenance and turf grass management, and is highly motivated playing an integral role in preserving and beautifying these park spaces, landscapes, turf areas, and natural spaces. The Crew Supervisor also plays a critical role in organizing work plans, leading and guiding park standards, and works to provide safe land management practices. There is an expectation to work with stakeholders, to meet needs, and to assist with park related maintenance requests. The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates that align with the City's values, is team-oriented and a leader with passion and vision for parks and serving the community.  The Natural Resources and Parks Destination Park Crew Supervisor position in the Park Maintenance Division is part of a dedicated and talented team that maintains the turf, grounds, and open space maintenance within the Destination Park District. This Crew Supervisor position is devoted to providing natural resources management, parks management and parks, horticulture maintenance.   Supervises and coordinates activities of workers performing parks grounds and horticulture maintenance within Destination Parks. This is a working position; desired applicant must have a desire to work outside. Supervisory Responsibilities This position directly supervises fulltime positions, part-time positions and coordinates volunteer events. * The ideal candidate has a passion for public service, is highly motivated and capable of managing all aspects of horticulture maintenance, and park maintenance within Destination Parks. * The candidate must have the ability to work with the City Horticulturist and Park Manager to make ornamental plant bed renovation recommendations, and suggestions for improvements to support a horticulture and natural area integrated pest management program. * The incumbent must have strong verbal and written communication skills to actively lead a team grounds maintenance professionals and other City staff, volunteers, contractors, vendors and consultants.   * The incumbent is punctual and dependable, has good time management skills and the ability to prioritize and multi-task.  * May serve as lead worker, assigning work and monitoring work completion or may supervise staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline and termination procedures. * Plans, prioritizes, schedules and allocates resources for maintenance activities; evaluates completed work; ensures adherence with safety and quality standards, and operational procedures. * Maintains reports, records, data and other documentation related to area of assignment. * Reviews inventory requirements; monitors and maintains supply and materials inventory levels and appropriate storage; initiates requests for the replenishment of inventory; monitors assigned budget and related expenditures. * Monitors and oversees the maintenance of equipment and tools; performs inspections; ensures safe operating condition of equipment; troubleshoots equipment issues; assesses needs; initiates requests for required repairs. * Responds to customer inquiries and concerns; provides information or directs customers to appropriate resource. * Provide assistance and crew support for special events or projects. * Other duties include participating in the completion of traditional grounds maintenance tasks including litter pick up and trash removal as well as the ability to operate all types of equipment associated with turf and landscape maintenance.   * Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. Education and Experience High School Diploma or GED and six years of related experience. OR An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation. Licensing/Certifications * Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire. * North Carolina Public Operator Pesticide License. Preferred Qualifications * Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire. Knowledge of: * Supervisory principles, practices and techniques (based on assignment). * Practices and methods of coaching and leading the work of others (based on assignment). * Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work. * Project management principles and practices. * Principles and practices of conflict resolution. * Basic budget administration. * Business math concepts. * Filing and record-keeping principles. * Uses and properties of supplies and equipment. * Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices. * Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations (based on assignment). * Customer service principles. * Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment. * Modern office technology. Skill In: * Supervising and evaluating staff performance (based on assignment). * Training and coaching staff (based on assignment). * Providing direction to others in order to meet standards. * Overseeing parks maintenance and related technical and skilled support activities in area of assignment. * Business math computations. * Budget and expense monitoring. * Developing and applying work standards, policies and procedures. * Composing and maintaining basic original documents including reports, presentations, and correspondence. * Organizing tasks, meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing demands. * Overseeing and organizing and maintaining records and files. * Providing attention to detail in assignments. * Proofreading and error correction. * Interpreting and applying applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards (based on assignment). * Providing customer service. * Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications. * Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. ADA and Other Requirements Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Heavy Work:  Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
