Summary King County Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) is searching for an exceptional leader to serve as a Commander for one of its two adult detention facilities (Current opening in the Seattle Divison). The Commander will serve in an appointed senior management position responsible for overseeing jail operations and program activities. Many initiatives and programs managed by the Commander have far-reaching implications with DAJD's ability to deliver quality service to County residents and inter-jurisdictional partners. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT The Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention (DAJD) is an Executive branch department with five divisions and approximately 900 budgeted employees supporting two adult detention facilities, a juvenile detention facility, various community supervision programs, and administrative services. The two adult secure detention divisions are the Seattle Division, which operates the King County Correctional Facility (KCCF), and the Kent Division, which operates secure detention at the Maleng Regional Justice Center (MRJC). As of July 1, 2024, the two adult jails combined housed close to 1,500 adult residents and book approximately 15,000 people per year. KEY DELIVERABLES AND EXPECTATIONS Reporting to the Deputy Director of DAJD, the Commander provides collaborative leadership and a clearly articulated vision for ensuring safe secure management of one of two adult detention facilities in King County. The Commander will: * Direct and manage jail operations which includes all jail activities, operations and staff as assigned, including the programming unit, office support, court detail, and transport unit. * Engage with leadership, inter-jurisdictional partners, and employees to strengthen workplace culture; increase access to learning and development; build a more diverse and culturally responsive workforce; increase health, well-being and safety; and assure our systems and processes support this work. * Collaborate with other County departments, federal, state and local agencies or organizations and the public to assess service needs and recommend new and revised policies. * Leads the development and implementation of strategic goals, vision, workforce management, performance measures, strategies, policies, best practices, and initiatives. * Direct and shape systems to promote a commitment to becoming the best run government, delivering county government services better than any other government entity by improving performance and processes. Foster a culture of innovation and sustained change with a strong sense of how to develop and offer new services. * Leverage the County's information and business intelligence systems to drive operational improvements with a focus on performance, measurement, and accountability. * Utilize internal and external resources, technology, and continuous improvement techniques to report metrics, improve processes, create more capacity, and deliver greater value to our community. * In partnership with the department's Chief Financial Officer, monitor and manage jail operations budget, produce data informed jail project budgets and produce short and long range operational plans. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS ROLE WILL: * Have well documented correctional experience as a manager with operational understanding. * Bring a strong background in directing and providing strategic leadership to organizations, including working collaboratively at all levels and across jurisdictions. * Have an exceptional record of successfully managing, developing and/or implementing strategic initiatives, policies, and systems including use of technology to achieve these outcomes. * Be customer-focused and comfortable advising and partnering with internal and external partners about complex initiatives, policies, and programming strategies. * Understand how to manage complex projects including scoping and organizing resources, developing work programs, and facilitating multi-disciplinary teams. * Have strategies and ideas to drive a culture of employee engagement which supports the development, learning, coaching, and team building necessary for a diverse workforce. * Advance a commitment to employee wellbeing, belonging, and morale to create a workplace that is cohesive and supportive of its workforce. * Is a champion for Equity, Race, and Social Justice. The salary for this position in 2024 has a range starting at $169,465 up to a top end (based on experience) of $214,807 annually and includes innovative and award-winning employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as a robust leave package.
