Applied Research Associates, Inc. is seeking an experienced engineer to provide technical support on nuclear weapon effects, nuclear counterproliferation, and nuclear survivability and other complex problems supporting DOD/DOE. These topics include technical support for WMD monitoring and safeguards, developing technologies for counterproliferation missions and developing synthetic environments for augmented/virtual reality mission planning and training. The candidate should have a background in nuclear engineering or related discipline, well-developed technical skills and an interest in programs related to nuclear technologies. The candidate should have an understanding of nuclear physics, nuclear materials, and the relationship of these topics to counterproliferation, survivability, emergency response, security, intelligence, and operations security activities. The candidate should have experience with nuclear sensors and radiation detection, and radiation detector response functions. The candidate will initially support development and execution of projects supporting WMD sensor applications, analysis of counterproliferation signatures, and analysis of nuclear forensics, treaty verification and consequence management. The candidate should understand the culture, mission, and priorities of U.S Special Operations Command. The candidate will work remotely but will assist in growing our business opportunities with partners near Ft. Liberty, NC. The candidate will also be expected to understand basic project management. Due to the nature of work, applicants selected must be U.S. citizens with the ability to obtain or maintain a Top-Secret security clearance. Candidates will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Nuclear Engineering Required Skills * Candidate must have demonstrated mathematical and analytical skills related to engineering of systems relevant to monitoring nuclear material release or detection. * Candidate must have experience with nuclear detection equipment and modeling. * Candidate must have well-developed oral and written communication skills with demonstrated experience interfacing with military and civilian experts. * Candidate must be a US Citizen and need to be able to obtain or maintain a Top-Secret security clearance. Nuclear Engineering Required Experience * B.S. degree and 2-4 years of relevant experience or M.S. degree and 0-2 years of relevant experience. Degree must be in nuclear or mechanical engineering, or a related discipline. * Experience with nuclear detection and radiation transport. * Experience supporting U.S. Special Operations Command. * Experience developing computer programs using languages such as Java, or Python. * Experience with MCNP. * Experience with computer-aided design (CAD). Nuclear Engineering Desired Qualifications: * M.S. degree strongly preferred. * Experience with nuclear detector testing and evaluation. * Ability to perform data acquisition and analysis in a field/lab setting. * Experience with image reconstruction or tomography. * Previous experience with radiation transport modeling including Monte Carlo codes such as MCNP. * Knowledge of emergency response, mission analysis, and concept of operations related to explosives ordinance disposal (EOD). * Previous experience with MATLAB, SCALE, MCNP, SolidWorks.
