The Shift Supervisor and Assistant Shift Supervisor work together to establish a continuity that will maintain a smooth flow of operations for the assigned shift. Serves as the Shift Supervisor in the absence of the Corrections Supervisor III. Plans, organizes, and directs the work of subordinate Corrections Officers in the performance of duties to ensure compliance with established operational procedures; works with subordinate staff in the area of resident management and problem solving; reviews reports submitted by subordinate personnel, including Disciplinary Reports, Incident Reports, and Narratives; prepares evaluations of subordinate employees as assigned; assists Shift Supervisors in preparation of counts; ensures all counts are accurate and properly documented; and responds to emergency situations in accordance with appropriate contingency plans. This position is assigned to rotation and candidate must be willing to work any shift. Qualifications: Education: High School Diploma or GED Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License. Able to perform the Essential/Event Driven Functions of the position. Certification as a Corrections Officer by the Secretary of Corrections. This certification is only issued upon completion of the Corrections Officer Basic Training and must be renewed annually as prescribed by the Secretary. Minimum Qualifications: Must meet all minimum qualifications and necessary special requirements for Corrections Officer IA; be at least 21 years of age at time of appointment; have three years of relevant experience in the field of corrections or in the detention of convicted residents including at least one year of supervisory experience and have successfully completed the Corrections Officer Training Program (COTP). At the discretion of the agency, college coursework in criminal justice, the behavioral sciences, or the social sciences, or completion of corrections officer training in another jurisdiction may be substituted for some or all of the required non-supervisory experience. Minimum Competencies: Applicant will be able to interact with coworkers, residents, and outside personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Applicant will possess the ability to counsel staff, to solve problems, and to make command decisions based on available information. Selected applicant will have strong organizational skills and function with minimal supervision and direction. Applicant must have knowledge of procedures and practices of supervising residents confined to an adult maximum correctional institution. Strong problem solving skills; good oral and written communication skills; effective conflict management skills; ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and effective customer service skills; ability to adapt to new situations and/or changes. An initial 6-month probationary period is required for new or promoted employees.
