Position Title: Director of Fieldwork Education, Assistant or Associate Professor, Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program Position Type: Full-Time Department: Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program Augustana University invites applications for the position of full-time Director of Fieldwork Education. SUPERVISOR: Program Director, Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program Qualifications: * Education: * Earned terminal academic doctorate in a discipline appropriate for teaching responsibilities, OR *
  • Doctor of Occupational Therapy degree (OTD) with specialization in a discipline appropriate for teaching responsibilities, with either degree being from an institution recognized by a USDE-recognized institutional accreditation agency. * Understanding of higher education and contemporary clinical practice appropriate for leadership in occupational therapy fieldwork education. * Knowledge of legislative, regulatory, legal, and practice issues affecting didactic and fieldwork education, students, and the profession of occupational therapy; 4. Occupational therapist with an active, unrestricted license in the state of residence, with eligibility for licensure in Minnesota and South Dakota. * Must hold an active registration with NBCOT. * Active in professional activities at local, state, and/or national levels. * Experience consistent with pursued academic rank consistent with Augustana University's faculty appointment ranking system. * At least two years documented experience in the field of occupational therapy which must include clinical practice as an occupational therapist and professional experience as a fieldwork educator. The DFE/AFWC holds a faculty academic appointment and has administrative, academic, service, and scholarship responsibilities consistent with the mission and philosophy of the academic program. This individual demonstrates competence in fieldwork education, teaching, and curriculum development. In addition, the DFE/AFWC primary responsibilities are to plan, coordinate, facilitate, administer, and monitor activities on behalf of the academic program and in coordination with academic and clinical faculty. These activities include but are not limited to the following: * Developing, monitoring, and refining the occupation-centered fieldwork education components of the curriculum. * Facilitating quality learning experiences for students during fieldwork education. * Evaluating students' performance, in cooperation with other faculty, to determine their ability to integrate didactic and clinical learning experiences and to progress within the curriculum. * Educating students, FWEs and academic faculty about fieldwork education. * Selecting clinical learning environments that demonstrate characteristics of sound patient/client management, ethical and professional behavior, and current occupational therapy practice. * Maximizing available resources for the fieldwork education program. * Providing documented records and assessment of the fieldwork education component (includes fieldwork sites, FWEs, etc.). * Actively engage core faculty in the planning, implementation, and assessment processes associated with fieldwork education. The DFE/AFWC serves as a liaison between the occupational therapy program and the fieldwork education site as part of his/her responsibilities. The DFE/AFWC, in cooperation with other academic faculty, establishes fieldwork education sites and facility standards, selects and evaluates fieldwork education sites, and facilitates ongoing development of and communication with fieldwork education sites and fieldwork educators (FWE). Administrative Responsibilities * Communication Between University, the OTD Program, and Fieldwork Education sites a. Communicates news and current information among all concerned stakeholders to maintain current knowledge of the educational program, the fieldwork education site, and health care changes affecting clinical practice and fieldwork education. * Provides ongoing communication with fieldwork educators (FWEs) at each fieldwork education site to support the compliance with current ACOTE Standards. * Communicates and oversees communication with FWEs, clinical faculty, and students to monitor progress and assess student performance. Provides guidance and support as required to problem solve and discuss pertinent issues with student(s) and FWEs. * Ensures all program policies, procedures, and practices under the responsibility of the Director of Fieldwork Education/AFWC provide for compliance with accreditation policies and procedures. * Provides direct input into curriculum design, review, and revision processes. * Participates in regional, state, and/or national fieldwork education forums, fieldwork education related activities, and programs designed to foster clinical education. * Administers a system for the academic program's fieldwork education records. * Assists the Program Director in the development of a program budget by providing input on items related to the fieldwork education program and overall program budget. * Manages fiscal allocations budgeted for fieldwork education. * Participates in the preparation of accreditation documentation and outcome performance assessment of students in the occupational therapy program. * Collaborates with faculty to promote, coordinate, plan, and provide FWE development opportunities using effective instructional methodologies and technologies. * Mentors other academic faculty about their role and responsibilities related to fieldwork education. Fieldwork Education Program Planning, Implementation, and Assessment * Develops, monitors, and refines the occupation-centered fieldwork components of the curriculum. * Provides oversight to the Fieldwork Education Policies and Procedures component of the Program Assessment Plan and ACOTE Self Study Report * Facilitates quality learning experiences for students during fieldwork education. * Evaluates students' performance, in cooperation with other faculty, to determine their ability to integrate didactic and clinical learning experiences and to progress within the curriculum. * Mentors and coaches students before, during, and after fieldwork, including taking probationary actions where needed. * Places, supervises, and communicates with students during fieldwork experiences. Fieldwork Education Site Development * Establishes, develops, and maintains an adequate number of fieldwork education sites relative to quality, quantity, and diversity of learning experiences to meet the educational needs of students and the academic program, the philosophy and outcomes of the program, and evaluative criteria set by ACOTE. * Develops outcomes, policies, procedures, materials, and assessments related to fieldwork. * Mentors and coaches FWEs in designing intentional occupation-centered learning experiences grounded in theory and evidence and approaches to assess student learning outcomes. * Provide ongoing evaluation and assessment of strengths and areas needing further development or action. Fieldwork Educator Development * Collaborate with FWEs to promote, coordinate, plan, and provide professional development opportunities using effective instructional methodologies and technologies * Evaluates each fieldwork education site through student feedback, on-site visits, and ongoing communications and routinely shares this information with academic and clinical faculty. * Provides feedback to FWEs concerning their effectiveness in delivering clinical learning experiences based on student feedback and through direct observations. * Encourages participation in regional, state, and/or national fieldwork education forums, fieldwork education related activities, and programs designed to foster clinical education.
