An Equal Opportunity Employer Nature of Work This is a part-time position for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Work involves instructing, leading, demonstrating and organizing classes and competitions in water safety, life saving procedures, swimming, and/or other similar programs. Supervision would be received from the Parks Aquatic Coordinator or designee. The exercise of independent judgment is expected within the limits of established guidelines and assigned authority. An employee in this position must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Essential Functions An incumbent in this position organizes, leads, demonstrates, and instructs classes in water safety, life saving procedures, swimming, and/or other similar programs at beginning or advanced levels to adults and/or children. Promotes water safety events sponsored by the City of Miami. Assists the Parks Aquatic Coordinator or designee in the scheduling of Learn to Swim and water safety programs. Observes and analyzes students' performance and instructs them in techniques and strategies. Demonstrates proper use of equipment. Explains and enforces required safety rules and regulations. Conducts periodic inspections of equipment and/or facilities for cleanliness and safety. Prepares work orders for necessary repairs or replacements. Maintains accurate records of receipts and expenditures. May prepare or maintain reports. Performs other related work as required. Minimum Requirements Applicants must be 16 years of age. The following valid certificates, and/or wallet card(s) must be possessed at time of application and maintained valid throughout employment: (1) Water Safety Instructor (2) Lifeguard Training (3) CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and (4) Standard First Aid issued by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized certifying agency. Additionally, some six (6) months experience working with persons with disabilities may be preferred. Must be able to pass the City of Miami's performance test, which may include swimming, running, and simulated rescue exercises. SPECIAL NOTE: Employees in this classification will be required to work various shifts, to include nights, holidays and weekends. Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening. Toxicology: Prospective employees may be required to submit to toxicology, medical and background screening.
