Job: Graduate Assistant -Exhibitions Job Summary: Part-time, hourly position reporting to the Director of Exhibitions, Programming, and Public Engagement Duration: 480 hours; scheduled from September 3, 2024 - June 30, 2025; scheduling is flexible but typically 7-8 hours a week for 38 weeks during the academic year (September 2024 - May 2025), including some time off. Job Description: About the position The Exhibitions Graduate Assistant is a part-time, hourly staff member who will work alongside the Director of Exhibitions, Programming, and Public Engagement to prepare, develop, and execute exhibition projects. The GA will attend meetings with exhibiting artists, assess and research materials needed for installations, and participate in coordination as a core member of the installation and de-installation team. They will engage in a range of other in-depth activities around exhibitions as needed, including: the design and development of signage and wayfinding, exhibit text, and outreach materials for each exhibition including websites and social media; physically monitoring and maintaining exhibitions; coordinating tours and visitor experiences; and supporting outreach for public engagement programs. About the Milstein Exhibitions Program The Cheryl and Philip Milstein Center for Teaching and Learning serves as an academic hub in the heart of the Barnard College campus. Combined, the academic centers and college library create a focal point at the center of the Barnard Campus in which students, staff, and faculty convene, dialogue, and collaborate across departments, disciplines, research methods, and modes of creativity. Installations in the Milstein Lobby Exhibition Space provide a visible and accessible opportunity for both internal and external visitors to understand how researchers and creators in our community are engaging with profound questions in a variety of interactive modes from 3-D design and fabrication, to time-based media and movement, self publication through zines to data and computation, as well as the development and showcasing of library and archival collections. We seek to develop and facilitate exhibitions that stimulate interdisciplinary conversations, engage with contemporary issues, and invite the participation of viewers and community members from the larger community beyond the university. Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: To Qualify Current enrollment in a graduate program is required. The ideal candidate will make a commitment to work from September through May, up to 8-9 hours of work per week, with increased hours (i.e. up to 15hrs) during weeks when special events or installations are scheduled. (There will be flexibility to take unpaid time off from December 23 - January 3, and during the academic year in consultation with the manager.) Preferred demonstrable skills include: desire to work both collaboratively and independently; excellent organizational, research, and communication skills; a demonstrated interest in critical studies of art, art history, public history, digital humanities, science and technology, media studies, performance studies or other related fields (e.g. bringing a critical race, feminist, disability justice, and/or queer theoretical lens to the work of exhibition and public art), experience with art installation, industrial design, or the creation of exhibitions and art display; graphic design experience, and fluency with Creative Suite apps and other design software.
