The purpose of this position is to perform technical work in conducting fire investigations, fire and life safety inspections, and occupancy inspections. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am -5:00 pm; occasional evenings and weekends depending on operational needs. Projected Hiring Range: $24.55 - $30.69 per hour. Compensation is determined based on qualifications.     Our Total Compensation Package: * Compensation - competitive market-rate pay, and negotiable based on qualifications. * Comprehensive State Medical Insurance, Dental and Vision Insurance  * Life Insurance * Long-term disability * Deferred Compensation 401K Plans * Health Savings Account (HSA) * Public Loan Forgiveness Program (Student Loan Forgiveness Program)  * 11 Paid Holidays + 3 Optional Holidays  * Longevity Pay * SC State Retirement Plan Pension  * Paid Vacation and Sick Time * Sick Bank * Critical Care and Cancer Insurance * Wellness Screenings  * Employee Assistance Programs Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  * Conducts biannual fire and life safety inspections to determine compliance with adopted codes and standards for all businesses located within an assigned area.   Conducts follow-up inspections, works with code enforcement officers regarding code violations and testifies in court concerning the results of inspections.  * Responds to fires in the unincorporated areas of the county and the small municipalities within the county to conduct investigations, as requested, to determine the origin and cause of the fire.  Rotates on-call duty for after-hours response.  * Schedules, plans, and conducts public fire prevention education programs for schools, businesses, and civic organizations.  Operates the "fire safety house" and animated robot to teach fire safety at schools, day cares, and at special events. * Prepares documents, maintains reports and scheduling for routine fire inspections, certificate of occupancy inspections, courtesy inspections, and fire investigation origin and cause, using various computer programs and specialized software. * Works closely with Building and Codes Officials, General Contractors, and Licensed Fire Equipment Contractors for the purpose of fire inspection duties. Works closely with Teachers and School Administrators for the purpose of Fire Safety Education. Works closely with local, state, and federal law enforcement as well as independent insurance investigators for the purpose of conducting fire investigations. * Research adopted codes, standards, local ordinances and laws and advises business owners/occupants and contractors with code interpretations to assist them in maintaining compliance. * Attends meetings and training classes as required to maintain competence and certifications for fire inspections, fire investigations and public education. * Conducts occupancy inspections for new commercial construction projects to determine compliance with adopted codes and standards. * Appears in court to testify as to the results of incendiary, suspected arson fires, and code violations as required. * Installs smoke detectors in private residences in accordance with established procedures.   Documents and maintains smoke detector installation reports. * Performs related work as assigned. Education and Experience: * High School Graduation or GED equivalent. * One (1) year of experience in fire service, fire investigation and/or fire inspections or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Special Certifications and Licenses: * Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. * Must possess South Carolina Resident State Fire Marshal Certification or ICC Fire Inspector I within a year of employment. * Must possess Fire Arson Course completion and Fire Education Course completion within one year of employment based on availability.  Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.  Physical Demands:  Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. * Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis. Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. * Involves routine and frequent exposure to: * Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen. * Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions. * Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife. * Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors. * Traffic; Moving machinery. * Electrical shock; Heights. * Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
