The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) has a career opportunity within the Director's Office. The mission of the Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) is to serve Montanans in their communities to improve health, safety, and well-being and empower independence. DPHHS administers a wide spectrum of health and human services programs. The Legislative Intern will assist in monitoring, analyzing, and researching public health and human services legislation. Performs public policy research and analysis for legislative consideration. Develops area expertise and responds to information requests from legislators and the public. Conducts project planning and management. Coordinates administrative duties for legislative interim committees. Provides staff support in varied topic areas and in the legislative process, procedures, and rules for standing committees during a legislative session. Qualifications for this Career Opportunity * Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Public Health, Political Science, Public Administration, Law, or a related field. * Strong interest in public policy, government processes, and public health and human services issues. * Substantial knowledge of the Montana Legislature, legislative process, rules and procedures, and state government. * Basic knowledge of Montana history, geography, economics, and demographics * Basic knowledge of legal research, statistical analysis, survey techniques, and negotiation * Ability to conduct and present legislative and policy research in an unbiased, nonpartisan fashion. * Ability to analyze statutes, codes, court decisions, and research materials. * Strong attention to detail and the ability to synthesize complex information. * Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. * Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills. * Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to use multiple presentation methods, including Internet and electronic media. * Ability to adapt to the changing needs of legislators and to work with a wide range of personalities and work styles. * Meet minimum qualifications: * Knowledge of the legislative process and state or federal government operations. * Previous experience in a government, policy, or nonprofit setting. * Familiarity with public health and human services programs and policies.
