JOB OPENING CITY OF FARMINGTON JOB POSITION #159 - Service Writer NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 1 DEPARTMENT: General Service/Vehicle Maintenance WORK LOCATION: MOC VM Shop HIRING RANGE: $17.21 - $26.80 / Hour PAY GRADE: G - Non-Exempt TYPE OF POSITION: Regular/Full-Time DAYS WORKED: Monday - Friday HOURS WORKED: 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. APPLICATIONS WILL BE RECEIVED THROUGH: Open Until Filled JOB DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Works under the supervision of the Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent or designee. Using excellent customer service skills, establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and all members of the general public. Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City. Coordinates and schedules routine and emergency repair service for city vehicles. Schedules city owned vehicles for preventative maintenance and repairs. Greets customers to the division and answers telephone. Generates a work order for vehicles requiring repair or maintenance, inputs data from work order to AS/400 computer system, and finalizes work order upon completion of the job. Provides Administrative diagnostic evaluations including interpreting customer described conditions to mechanical language for work orders. Provides customer service duties including pick-up and delivery of vehicles and keeping customers informed of the status of their repair/service work. Orders parts from local vendors when necessary. Updates preventative maintenance schedules for vehicles as needed. Coordinates all outside vehicle repair work with local vendors. Responds to requests for service from the field i.e. emergency breakdowns. Assists mechanics with research on proper diagnosis, maintenance and repair of vehicles using manuals, reference materials, etc. to ensure a cohesive process of vehicle and equipment repairs. In the absence of the Manager, Fleet Maintenance Operations Division, provides guidance and direction to the Lead Mechanics. Attendance at work is an essential function of this position. Ascertains automotive problems and services by listening to customer description of symptoms, clarifying descriptions of problems. Check Vehicle maintenance records and examine service schedules. Verifies warranty, recalls and service contract coverage. Schedule warranty work with proper dealership Acts as liaison between customer and technicians Explains terminology and the nature of work completed to customer. Answers all customer questions regarding condition of vehicle, wait time and cost of repairs. Ability to understand and interpret vehicle terminology. Answer phone calls for the Vehicle Maintenance Department. Develops relations with customers through successful management of products and service. Track repairs, their causes, and schedule technicians. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Assists in processing paperwork with the State of New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division in Santa Fe and the local field office to license new vehicles and equipment, as needed. Orders supplies and materials for the division, as needed. Assists in the automotive parts room and dispatch when necessary. Maintains files for the division. May serve on various employee committees, as required and assigned. May be required to perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing. Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent and specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field; or any combination of education and experience. Valid New Mexico driver's license (or current state of residency) with acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years. Knowledge of automotive mechanics including maintenance and diagnostics. Knowledge of, or ability to acquire, information of standardized automotive labor repair times. Ability to type 30 wpm or at a rate sufficient to perform duties of job. Data entry experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel and the public. Ability to operate tools and equipment listed. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Telephone, calculator, copy machine, fax machine and motor vehicle. Familiarity with and ability to learn and become proficient within the AS/400 computer system.
