Title: AAMD Education Intern State Role Title: Education Support Assistant Hiring Range: $14.87/hour Pay Band: 1 Agency: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Location: Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Agency Website: https://www.vmfa.museum Recruitment Type: General Public - G Job Duties The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is pleased to announce the posting for an American Association of Museum Directors (AAMD) Education Intern. VMFA has been selected as one of ten placement sites in the United States for this opportunity. In addition to assisting VMFA's Early Childhood Education (ECE) staff and faculty with classes and programs, the AAMD Education Intern will be a part of an interdepartmental discussion and planning process centered on improving communication, both on campus and through media and external channels, on the public's role in keeping works of art safe and free of damage. This position will be paid $14.87 per hour and will run from mid-May through the beginning of November 2024. Additionally, funding will be provided for the AAMD Education Intern to attend a regional professional development conference and cover a one-year student membership to a professional organization encouraging study within the museum and/or art education field. The AAMD Education Intern will receive professional mentorship by the Joan P. Brock Director of Education and Assistant Deputy Director for Art and Education. VMFA's Education Department centers on the core values of Quality, Collaboration, and being Community-centered. Through art and shared experiences, we invite an exchange of diverse perspectives to uncover layers of meaning, and in turn, support discovery, learning, and deeper connections. The AAMD Education Intern will collaborate with Early Childhood Education staff in the administration, research, and implementation of programs for children 3-months to 5-years old, specifically Curiosity Camps, May-June 2024. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, VMFA's ECE programs honor children as active, capable members of their community and position parents and caregivers-as well as the learning environment-as essential to their learning process. As part of this internship, the AAMD Education Intern will also work with staff members from VMFA's Evaluation and Research, Visitor Services, Registration, Exhibition Design, Conservation, and Marketing teams to explore ways to enhance communication, both on campus and through media and external channels, on the public's role in keeping works of art safe and free of damage. At the end of the internship, the Intern will propose tools and methods to VMFA's Education team on how to best educate caregivers and their families about this aspect of museum visitation. Minimum Qualifications The ideal candidate should be an incoming or outgoing sophomore, junior, or senior at an accredited college/university in art education, early childhood education, general education, museum studies, museum education, art history, program evaluation and research, or related field. The successful candidate should also have: * Knowledge of basic childhood development and experience working with children ages 3 months to 5 years. * Knowledge of studio art disciplines, museum education, museum operations, and art history. * Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and connect with youth of all ages and backgrounds and their caregivers. * Excellent organizational skills. * Strong customer service skills and oral and written communication ability. * Use of sound judgment and decision-making to resolve problems. * Experience with Microsoft Office Suite. Additional Considerations * Experience in education and studio art and/or other educational programs for early childhood and family audiences is a plus. * Awareness of current teaching methods and practices and classroom/group management. * Awareness of basic evaluation and research practices including surveys, participant interviews, and focus groups. * The selected candidate must pass a criminal history background check and be vetted by AAMD.
