Department: Public Works Anticipated Work Schedule: Varies Reports To: Chief Dog Warden Full Time Regular Bargaining Unit: Teamsters 436 Classified or Unclassified: Classified REQUIREMENTS: High school diploma or equivalent and 100 hours of training in caring for and handling healthy and diseased animals; must have a valid Ohio Drivers' License; must be at least 21 years of age; ability to read and write common vocabulary, and perform basic math. RESPONSIBILITIES: Enforces statutes regulating ownership and control of animals pursuant to Section 955 of the Revised Code; Capture, control and lift dogs of varying weights, strengths, activity levels and temperaments; Cleans and sterilizes kennels and feeds animals; Patrols county in animal transport truck to seize and impound unlicensed dogs , stray dogs, dogs running at large; Responds to emergency calls for sick or injured stray dogs needing medical attention and transports for treatment; Investigates reports of dangerous or vicious dogs; Investigates complaints on violations of applicable Ohio animal laws; Issues citations to dog owners and appear in court to testify; Distributes dog license notices , including door-to-door census; Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records; Follows up on lost and found reports and any information on dog ownership; Assists with recording of physical observations of dogs; Reunites dogs with owners and adopts unclaimed dogs to the general public; Collects fees and fines related to citations, adoptions, reuniting lost dogs, licenses, etc., Must complete a euthanasia technician certification course in compliance with Ohio Revised Code 4729.532 to assist in performing euthanasia of animals in various conditions; Assists supervisors as directed with all shelter operations; Performs all other related duties as required; Must possess effective public and personal communication skills, math skills; and be able to follow written and oral instructions. Application Process This is a competitive, classified position. The Personnel Review Commission (PRC) will check your application to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications. If you do, the PRC will invite you to take a civil service examination. The exam is specific to this position. Everyone who passes the exam goes on an eligibility list. To fill this opening, the PRC sends the hiring department and Human Resources (HR) a certified eligibility list with the top 25% candidates (or at least the ten highest scoring candidates, whichever is greater). HR helps the hiring department decide who from the certified list to follow up with for interviews and then a job offer. Most of our communication with candidates is through email. Prior criminal convictions do not automatically disqualify you from employment; the County looks at criminal convictions on a case-by-case basis using the guidelines in Chapter 306 of the County Code.
