Position Information Position/Rank Rank DOQ Department 00865 - Psychiatry - Adult Clinical City Salt Lake City, UT Track Non Tenure Track New Position to Begin FY25 Details Academic Emergency Room Psychiatrist, Rank DOQ University of Utah Health (HMHI) - Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine - Psychiatry The Huntsman Mental Health Institute and the Adult Psychiatry Division in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine seek a dedicated and motivated full-time Emergency Room Psychiatrist to join its faculty. The University of Utah Hospital's Emergency Department (ED) is a Level 1 Trauma Center, serving as a major tertiary care center for Utah and the surrounding states, including Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, and Idaho. The department sees approximately 91,000 patients annually. The facility is equipped with central telemetry monitoring and a rapid X-ray and CT suite and is home to the AirMed aeromedical transport service. The emergency department features specialized areas like the "Gold Pod," designed to handle psychiatric emergencies. The emergency department is staffed 24/7 with master-level social workers who provide crisis evaluations and work closely with psychiatrists, residents, and emergency room providers to help with disposition planning and care of patients in crisis. We seek a qualified professional to help us meet the challenges of providing high-quality psychiatric services in a growing mental healthcare market. Local and regional communities rely on the Huntsman Mental Health Institute to improve overall mental health and quality of life. We do this by maintaining a commitment to outstanding patient care, the highest standard of training for medical students and residents, and the continued expansion of our pioneering research programs. Successful candidates will play an important role in the Department of Psychiatry, providing clinical services for the University of Utah's Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) and University of Utah Hospital. They will be part of a supportive team, and their faculty appointment and rank will be based on their academic experience and professional accomplishments. The University of Utah is located in the capital city, Salt Lake City - one of the most beautiful cities in the world, surrounded by mountains, with world-class skiing, hiking, rock climbing, and mountain biking. The city is vibrant, with theater, arts, sports, opera, orchestra, ballet, and nightlife. Qualifications: Candidates should have experience providing team-oriented care, excellent time management skills, the ability to work within managed care settings, an interest in helping develop our growing emergency/crisis psychiatry services, and a creative and adaptive outlook in a fast-paced crisis environment. Applicants should hold or be eligible to apply for a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in Utah, and have expertise in adult psychiatry. Completion of residency in Psychiatry is required. The candidate must be board-certified or board-eligible in Psychiatry. Obtaining board certification is a requirement for retention. Additional training or experience in crisis care or emergency psychiatry is desirable. Responsibilities: Clinical Care Primary responsibilities include providing psychiatric evaluations, risk assessments, and psychiatric management for University of Utah Hospital emergency department patients. There will also be opportunities to provide virtual consultations with our South Jordan emergency department and the West Valley emergency room when construction is complete. The work schedule will be Monday through Friday. This is a full-time position and the work hours will reflect this. The actual daily start and stop time will be finalized with input from the ED leadership, but it is anticipated that the work hours will range somewhere between 8 AM and 8 PM. Call is an expected clinical responsibility for all faculty members. Specific assignments will be coordinated through the division Chief of Adult Psychiatry. The selected applicant will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including social workers, nurses, residents, and fellows, to develop and implement short-term treatment and disposition plans, prescribe and manage psychiatric medications, and work with emergency room providers to manage patients awaiting psychiatric placement. In addition to working closely with the Emergency Department personnel, they will work with the soon-to-open HMHI Kem and Carolyn Gardner Mental Health Crisis Care Center (MHCCC) administration and providers to help coordinate care for patients in the emergency department(s). Investigation Engage in scholarly activities; The opportunity to participate in or initiate peer-reviewed research and develop durable materials (papers, courses, presentations, posters, games) is available. Education Engage in patient care activities with learners (residents, medical students, physician assistant students, and fellows); Serve as a medical student and resident mentor; Teach/supervise medical students, residents, and fellows in psychiatric clinical rotations. Administration Administrative duties associated with clinical care provided; administrative service to the Department of Psychiatry, the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, and the health system, including peer review and participation on committees, may be requested to attain academic promotion; report to and be reviewed annually by the division Chief as part of the School of Medicine faculty appointment. The percentage of effort spent on clinical, education, investigation, and administrative activities will be negotiated annually.
