This job is to assist the Church History Department in its purpose to help God's children make and keep sacred covenants by coordinating and directing the work of others. As a supervisor, he/she will provide team members feedback regarding their performance, including an annual review. The incumbent will also lead out in the hiring process of team members and help recruit volunteers. The incumbent will use his/her knowledge and experience to influence strategies, policies, operations, and tools/work products. He/she will also serve on or lead department committees. The incumbent may also contribute to the archival and history communities by participating at conferences and serving in professional organizations. This seasoned incumbent will be heavily relied on to build and provide access to a historically significant and useful collection of Church history records. The work consists of cataloging, processing, and facilitating access to historical records. Work is done in teams consisting of employees, interns, and volunteers, often located across the world and collaboration is essential. The incumbent will both perform the work themselves and train and direct employees, interns, and volunteers to carry out all or some of the functions. The work must be done expeditiously and accurately. The incumbent may also use this subject matter expertise to contribute to Church products with accurate information, context, and story ideas, and because of his/her relationships he/she may facilitate contributions from other experts. Required: * Master's degree in history, library science, archival studies, anthropology, sociology, global studies, or other related fields. * Six years of experience; or equivalent education and experience mix. Transnational experience desired. * Broad knowledge of history, especially Church history. Some knowledge of Church History in Europe and Africa preferred. * Mastery level understanding and application of archival principles, practices, and standards and an understanding how these topics are utilized by the Church History Department, including adherence to the Church History Department's Unified Standards Manual and how to handle various record types. * Strong oral & written communication skills in English. Proficiency in at least one other major European or African language preferred. * Proven ability to effectively supervise, train, and mentor others. * Excellent project management skills. * Able to effectively lead mixed-unit teams and committees. * Ability to thrive in collaborative situations, resolve difficult issues in a professional manner, perceive and analyze situations accurately, and meet objectives under strict deadlines. * Experience with Church history resources and the Church History Archives collections, including demonstrated expertise in more than one locality and/or subject. * Familiarity with fundamental principles of effective digital user experience and how to apply this knowledge when structuring and describing collections to optimize their discoverability and usefulness. * Sound understanding of the audiences that use the Church History Catalog. * Demonstrated application of historical research methodology. * Good judgement; organization and planning skills; demonstrated ability to perceive, analyze, and resolve problems; interpersonal skills and influence, including the ability to handle difficult donors and patrons in a professional manner. * Capable of representing the division in a variety of settings. * Publishes and/or presents at conferences, training meetings, and other professional and Church venues. * Ability to sit for long periods of time while using computer monitors/equipment. * Able to tolerate exposure to dust and mold from old records and artifacts. * Able to lift 50 lbs. * Ability to travel. Preferred: * Language skills are sometimes required, and cultural sensitivity is vital. * Preferred candidates will already possess in-depth knowledge associated with the assignment. For instance, knowledge of important people, dates, locations, and events. * Supervises and trains employees, interns, and volunteers and assists employees in career development. * Coordinates with employees and volunteers in Africa and Europe to ensure that newly acquired records are processed in a timely manner and in accordance with quality standards. * Manages collection-processing workflows, monitors and reports results, and initiates efforts to innovate and improve. * Handles complex and sensitive information across diverse cultures and languages, including information from or about senior Church leaders and Church operations. * Assists in the management of preservation facilities across Africa and Europe to store and digitize archived records. * Collaborates with other department teams on the creation of Church History products * Develops professionally by participating in conferences and professional organizations.
