OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY Under the supervision of the Lab Director, coordinate and manage the Gross Anatomy and Human Fresh Tissue laboratories. Assist Lab Manager with all embalming and fresh tissue preparation work for the GA Laboratory and the Human Fresh Tissue (HFT) Laboratory. Work closely, while being on call, with the Lab Manager to cross-cover any activities in both GA and HFT labs. Clear all budget requests through the Lab Manager. WORK PERFORMED Prepare, clean and supply Gross Anatomy/Anatomical Gifts teaching laboratory for the School of Medicine, with up to 125 medical students per course. Assist laboratory users as needed. 15% Interact daily with instructors and other users in the Gross Anatomy lab. Prepare, clean and supply the Human Fresh Tissue Laboratory. Assist laboratory users as needed. 25% Supervise and manage schedule for the lab assistant position. 10% Perform embalming duties on all cadavers accepted for use in the Gross Anatomy laboratory as directed and overseen by the Lab Director. 20% Prepare special use cadavers by performing latex injection for HFTL use. Perform blood draws on cadavers and send cadaver blood to testing facilities. Procurement of specimens needed from cadavers accepted to HFTL (dissection/prosection of cadavers). Prepare cadavers for cremation, arrange for their removal and receive the cremated remains. This includes preparing all tissue for bio-hazard pick-up, keeping complete records on cadavers. Deliver cremated remains to the administrative assistant for mailing or scatter the remains in Duke Forest. 5% Cover the Anatomical Gifts Program on-call phone (days and week nights) as determined by the Director. Work closely with the Administrative Assistant of the AGP to facilitate all donation procurement activities. 10% Maintain cadaver records, embalming facility, storage cooler and departmental van, making sure it is within all state and Duke required specifications. 2.5% Assist Lab Coordinator to assure laboratory safety and use protocols are followed for courses and laboratory activities. 2.5% Purchase and stock equipment and supplies necessary for the operation of the Gross Anatomy laboratory, the Human Fresh Tissue laboratory and embalming facility. 2.5% Assist Human Fresh Tissue Lab with special courses and activities. Give advice and supply hands-on expertise during facility construction and upgrades. 5% DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES Education Work requires knowledge of business practices and administrative principles normally acquired through two years post-secondary education. Experience Work requires 4 years of progressively responsible experience in an administrative, programmatic, or program support capacity to acquire skills necessary to plan, organize, and implement programs and conferences and provide general administrative and organizational management. Skills Preferred Knowledge of human anatomy, laboratory safety and medical technology. Knowledge of basic accounting principles and business management. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education Work requires an educational background generally equivalent to two (2) years of college course work in chemistry or related science field. Experience Work requires three years related experience to acquire skills and requirements. Knowledge to procure, set-up and maintain supplies and materials used in laboratory course work. A bachelor's degree in chemistry or biological sciences which is directly related to the specific position may be substituted for the education/training and experience requirement. A bachelor's degree in chemistry or biological sciences which is not directly related to the specific position plus one year of related experience may be substituted for the education/training and experience.
