Job Description Summary: * Cover Letter Required* About the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) The National Academy of Medicine (NAM), established in 1970 under the name Institute of Medicine (IOM), is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; and beyond. With the authority of the 1863 Congressional Charter of the National Academy of Sciences requested and signed by President Abraham Lincoln, the NAM serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as adviser to the nation and the international community. The NAM's mission is to advance science, inform policy, and catalyze action to achieve human health, equity, and well-being. About the Program As part of the NAM's commitment to building leadership capacity across diverse disciplines to shape the future of health and medicine, the Health Policy Fellowships and Leadership Programs (HPFLP) office administers a portfolio of highly regarded programs. These programs offer unique learning opportunities for exceptional early- and mid-career professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills; expand their networks of leaders in health and medicine; contribute their expertise to help shape sound, evidence-based policies; and accelerate their career development. About the Position This position will be responsible for the development, management, administration, and growth of two high profile programs: NAM International Fellowships and the (new) NAM Fellowship in Global Women's Health Research. The NAM International Fellowships currently consists of two programs (International Health Policy Fellowship and NAM-HKU Fellowship in Global Health Leadership) with partner institutions in Hong Kong (Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and University of Hong Kong (HKU). The NAM Fellowship in Gobal Women's Health Research is a new program program intended to build capacity of researchers in low- and middle-income countries in research and development in specific areas of women's health. Job Description: Essential Job Duties: Project Development, Management & Administration: Designs and manages complex fellowship and leadership development programs. Develops and oversees program strategy, budget, and staffing requirements. Assembles and manages Advisory Committees. Leads and manages educational programs, orientation, mentorship programs, and workshops. Communicates and coordinates with committee chair(s) and other members of advisory committee(s), and planning group(s). Supports fellows and staff in all aspects of work. Identifies and gathers materials and develops educational programs and experiences intended to achieve program goals and objectives. Sponsor Stewardship: Maintains ongoing relationships with major sponsors and develops new program areas, as indicated. Conducts background research on topics for new programs or activities and writes prospectuses and proposals for new and continuing funding. Identifies potential sponsors. Raises funds for current and future projects. Negotiates funding with sponsors. Where applicable, manages funder/member/stakeholder relations. Financial Management: Responsible for the financial management of programs under their purview, including overseeing budget, schedule, and authorizing expenditures. As required, collaborates with financial staff to ensure compliance. Advanced Research and Writing Activities: Develops and maintains robust knowledge of major issues, stakeholders, and policy initiatives in areas of assigned activity and responsibility. Develops educational programs to achieve program goals and objectives. Drafts and edits materials for publication. As necessary, synthesizes and applies research findings and technical data and determines the relevance of data for purposes of the program or activity. Team Management: Supervises program or project staff, including delegating tasks and assignments and managing workloads. Ensures staff are appropriately trained and manages staff development. Mentors staff, initiates personnel actions, conducts performance reviews, interprets, and ensures consistent application of organizational policies. Communication, Dissemination, and Information Management: Collaborates with experts and sponsors from federal, state, and local government agencies, foundations, academic institutions, and other organizations. Represents the Health Policy Fellowships and Leadership Programs and the National Academy of Medicine within and outside of the National Academies. Where applicable, works cross-functionally to plan and implement communications activities related to assigned programs or projects. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of the scientific, technical, or policy issues in health care and public health globally. Strong program/project management and facilitation skills. Ability to understand and share technical/scientific issues with diverse audiences. Ability to solve problems using originality and ingenuity. Ability to serve as a resource to others in the resolution of complex problems and issues. Ability to operate using substantial latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to independently develop and manage multiple and complex projects. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to train and develop staff. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers, employees in other National Academies' departments, and external constituents through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and constituents. Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's degree in a related field, or equivalent knowledge. Minimum Experience: Six years of related professional experience, including at least two years in a supervisory capacity, is necessary. This position also requires experience running international programs that have a demonstrated impact on the advancement of science, research, or policy through the successful completion of National Academies' activities or equivalent outside activities. Demonstrated high level of proficiency in conveying scientific, technical, and/or policy information in verbal and written form. Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time. Ability to travel internationally. Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None. Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: This position will report to the Director. Independently supervises program staff. Compensation Range: The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine support equity, fairness, and transparency in our compensation programs. An estimated compensation range for this position is $101,130 - $158,015. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will be based on the candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and work experience, commensurate with compensation of current employees in comparable positions with similar knowledge, skills, and work experience, and subject to budget parameters. Note it is not typical for a candidate to be hired at the higher end of the range. Work Environment Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 20% with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
