Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. For more than 150 years, BAM has been the home for adventurous artists, audiences, and ideas-engaging both global and local communities. With world-renowned programming in theater, dance, music, opera, film, and much more, BAM showcases the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters. The Education team seeks three highly qualified and experienced Teaching Artists who specialize in teaching poetry, spoken word, and/or theater, emphasizing BIPOC and LGBTQ+ playwrights in an 9th-12th grade setting during the 2024-2025 academic year. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Facilitate a one-time or a sequential series (i.e., residency) of in-person or virtual workshops within BAM Education Word.Sound.Power in the Classroom (poetry/spoken word) and (Re)Centering Theater programs * Participate in virtual or in-person multi-day curriculum development meetings at BAM with fellow BAM teaching artists to develop step-by-step lesson plans per BAM's template(s) * Communicate with school administrators/teachers to determine workshop scheduling * Participate in planning/reflection meetings with BAM staff and school partners * Support program assessment and evaluation procedures * Support the planning and coordination of culminating student events * Attend BAM TA staff meetings, Word.Sound.Power in the Classroom and (Re)Centering Theater workshop observations, professional development, and reflection meetings * Attend relevant BAM performances Qualifications * Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant work experience and/or proven artistic and educational expertise in one or more of the following disciplines: Theater, playwriting, directing, traditional poetry, slam poetry, and/or spoken word * Strong interpersonal communication, public speaking, and customer service skills (both in-person and over the phone) * Ability to build positive, collaborative working relationships with BAM staff, school teachers, administrators, and a diverse range of young people * Teaching experience in the arts (previous work in New York City preferred) * Curriculum development experience * Familiarity with the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and the Common * Willingness to work collaboratively with BAM Education staff and BAM Teaching Artists to develop curriculum * Experience working with diverse youth populations, including English Language Learners, students with individual learning plans, and students with disabilities * Awareness of youth developmental stages and current youth issues * Commitment to ongoing growth and refinement of teaching artist skills by participating in appropriate meetings and BAM professional development * Experience assessing and evaluating programs * Commitment to maintaining an equitable, diverse, and inclusive work environment * Comfortable working with DEI concepts, programs, and initiatives Working Conditions: * Ability to work during school and/or after-school hours * Teaching and facilitation will occur in traditional (i.e., public school classroom) and non-traditional learning environments. * Meetings and professional development generally occur on the Brooklyn Academy of Music's campus. * This is a hybrid role. Some duties will be performed in-person (on-site workshop facilitation at area schools) and remotely (large-scale TA meetings, 1:1 check-in, and curriculum development sessions). Compensation: * TAs will receive $120 per facilitation session. * TAs who participate in meetings, curriculum developments, or one-on-one sessions with BAM staff will receive $50 for the first hour and $25 for each additional hour. * This position is classified as part-time, seasonal, and non-exempt.
