Rolling Hills Zoo General Curator Reports to: Executive Director Effective Date: 2024 Job Summary: To oversee the Rolling Hills Zoo animal collection and ensure the best standards of husbandry and care for animal wellbeing and welfare. General Duties and Responsibilities: * Member of the Zoo's leadership team * Demonstrates a commitment to the Zoo's mission statement and core values. * Performs duties in a service-oriented manner. * Demonstrates a commitment to maintaining a healthy work environment. * Recognizes the needs of others and treats others with respect and dignity. * Maintains good work habits and adheres to all policies and procedures. Key Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to): * Responsible for husbandry, maintenance, and oversight of all animals at Rolling Hills Zoo. * Responsible for maintaining current knowledge of all AZA standards of care and husbandry related to RHZ animals. * Works with the Head Keeper to ensure optimum husbandry and animal care. * Works with the Veterinarian to ensure optimum medical care of the animal collection. Assists the Veterinarian in medical procedures as needed. * In consultation with the Veterinarian, is responsible for all animal diets and evaluation of nutritional needs of the animal collection. * Works with the Director and Assistant Director in exhibit design, alteration, and renovations. * Responsible for acquisition and transfers of animals according to AZA guidelines and recommendations. Is accountable to AZA species management groups for acquisition, transfers, and breeding of such species. * Responsible for the oversight of appropriate USFWS permits, USDA records and reports, and compliance with all state and federal regulations related to the animal collection. * Responsible for timely completion of all AZA surveys, questionnaires, and communications related to the animal collection. * Working with the Executive Director, Assistant Director, and other staff, is involved for the compilation of the Institutional Collection Plan. * In conjunction with the Executive Director, the Assistant Director, Veterinarian and other staff, is involved in the creation or revision of policy related to the animal collection. * With other key staff, plays a significant role in decision making in regards to the mission of the park, general policy, and creation of the strategic and master plans. * Will oversee all animal food and supplies, ensuring ordering is done on a timely basis and appropriate inventory is maintained. * Will coordinate the maintenance of pest control systems by working with appropriate vendors and staff as needed. * Responsible for organizing and conducting keeper meetings as needed to provide the keeper staff with current information regarding RHZ activities and special events while providing a forum for the discussion of husbandry issues, animal health concerns, safety concerns, and exhibit maintenance needs. * Responsible for organizing and conducting keeper meetings as needed to provide the keeper staff with current information regarding RHZ activities and special events while providing a forum for the discussion of husbandry issues, animal health concerns, safety concerns, and exhibit maintenance needs. Experience Required * Knowledge of animal husbandry in a wide variety of animal species. • Five years' experience working with exotic animals. • Must have excellent people and team building skills. • Must have knowledge of animal needs in exhibit design. • Must have strong computer skills. • Must be capable of public speaking. • Must be capable of problem solving and crisis management.
