Recruitment Number 1547 Number of Vacancies 1 Working Title Competitive Sports Coordinator Classification Title Recreation Program Manager Proposed Salary to be Offered $45,744 / 11 month appointment Appointment Percentage (Budget) 91.67% Position Summary The Competitive Sports Coordinator is a full-time professional staff position within the Department of Recreational Sports, which falls under the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (UWL). Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Programs, the Competitive Sports Coordinator will provide leadership, vision, and oversight of a comprehensive competitive sports program including intramural sports and sport clubs. The Competitive Sports Coordinator manages the program's daily operations, financial and risk management, policy and procedure development, event planning, and staff training and supervision. No Required Qualifications * Bachelor's degree * A minimum of two years of experience in a collegiate, government, or commercial recreation setting. * Two or more years of experience supervising full-time professional and/or part-time employees * Previous experience/knowledge of officiating various sports including basketball, flag football, soccer and volleyball * Knowledge of best practices in collegiate intramural sports and sport clubs * Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion * Effective written and verbal communication skills * Skills in conflict resolution processes and techniques and demonstrate ability to work with difficult individuals Preferred Qualifications * Master's degree in recreation or related field * An understanding of student development, student life, and university business processes * American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid, CPR and AED certification * American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification * Experience supervising student employees * Experience leading officiating workshops/clinics * Knowledge of relevant safety and risk management protocols * Ability to promote, direct, implement and evaluate a multiplicity of projects, assignments and extracurricular activities with little supervision. * Demonstrated computer skills in word processing, database management, spreadsheet and desktop publishing applications. * Proficient in the use of the following: IMLeagues, SubItUp, and Fusion. * High School officiating certifications in basketball, volleyball, football and/or soccer. * Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with NIRSA and NIRSA National Championship Series programs Physical Demands * Must possess the physical strength and endurance required to conduct the following activities: moving and lifting heavy supplies & equipment (fifty pounds or more) and sustaining high levels of activity over long periods of time. Responsibility Statement Responsible for the day-to-day operations of a robust competitive sports program including intramural sports & sport clubs Duties to Support Responsibility General * Directly supervise up to 100 student employees in the following positions including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, advising and evaluating: * Student Coordinators * Supervisors * Officials * Scorekeepers * Develop policies that create a culture of safety and personal responsibility. Create, update, and revise employee training, handbooks/manuals, sport rules, and standard operating procedures in accordance with industry best practices and University policy * Ensuring the safety and well-being of participants, develop and implement risk management strategies, incident response plans and maintain compliance with relevant regulations and policies * Ongoing program evaluation, assessment, and continual improvement * Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and community partners * Collaborate with University programs and departments as well as external groups to develop joint programs and services in support of Rec Sport's mission * Manage the inventory, maintenance, and purchasing of all equipment for responsible areas * Ensure facilities are properly scheduled for programming. Routinely examine facilities and communicate any needed repairs or recommendations. * Create and maintain a dynamic team atmosphere that delivers a high and consistent level of customer service * Development and delivery of marketing strategies in partnership with appropriate entities. Maintain and update IMLeagues the Competitive Sports pages of the Rec Sports website Intramural Sports * Organize, schedule, supervise, and evaluate over 4,000 individual, dual, team contests annually * Coordinate and facilitate student staff meetings/trainings, officiating clinics, and captains' meetings * Manage business operations including point of sale transactions, budgeting, capital planning, purchasing, and payroll * Advise the Student Officials Association Sport Clubs * Advise, mentor, and train all sport club officers and leaders, including, but not limited to, member recruitment, opponent and field scheduling, club promotion, budget management, equipment management, risk management, and trave * Coordinate hazing and alcohol education programs * Coordinate all on-campus practice and contest schedules for 24 clubs and over 500 club athletes * Provide event management for all home contests and tournaments, over 50 contests annually. * Collaborate with department athletic trainer for coverage, home contest scheduling and care of club athletes * Create, monitor, and approve spending of individual sport club budgets * Provide oversight for all Sport Clubs' Student Faculty Organizational (SFO) accounts and fundraised dollars * Manage and allocate segregated fee budget of $50,000 * Advise the Sport Club Executive Council Responsibility Statement Contribute to the department and University Duties to Support Responsibility * Assist with the coordination of departmental training and development for student employees * Operate within assigned budget amounts and assist with annual budget preparation to include budget management, review, and forecasting * Track participation data and contribute to the development of the annual report, development of strategic goals, and the assessment of established goals. * Ensure the department's philosophy and direction permeates the programs and services of all areas of responsibility * Keep up to date regarding evolving issues within collegiate recreation and competitive sports. Research and benchmark trends and opportunities for growth * Teach American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certification courses (must obtain certification within the first 6 months of employment and maintain) * Assist in special event programming * Attend University functions of general importance to the student body or the University * Serve on and/or lead departmental, Student Affairs and University committees as needed * Participate in regional and national collegiate recreation organizations * Perform other duties as they pertain to the overall objective of the position, as assigned.
