Definition The Recreation and Parks Department is seeking to fill several spots in our forestry section. As a Forestry Technician, you will play an integral role in the implementation and sustainability of our Urban Forestry Mastery Plan. Under direction, is responsible for performing routine and regular forestry work to includepruning trees on and removing trees from City property; performs related duties as required. Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.) Prunes and removes trees using chain saws and pole saws and other means; Climbs trees using ropes and saddle to prune or remove high limbs; Operates machinery such as chipper, log loader, and stump grinder; Maintains machinery and vehicles in proper operating condition by checking fluid levels, greasing parts, and sharpening or replacing chainsaw and chipper blades; Performs safety inspections on ropes, saddles, chain saws, and other equipment; Cleans worksite of debris upon job completion using rakes, brooms, and shovels; Drives trucks to and from worksite; Responds to emergency storm calls on a twenty-four hour basis; Plants and maintains trees on City property; Follows prescribed safety rules at all times; Utilizes a mobile device to document work order status; May drive commercial motor vehicles and/or operate an aerial; May utilize hand-held GPS equipment to document and transmit the coordinates of tree locations; May learn to perform tree inspections and other more complicated forestry work. Minimum Qualifications One (1) year of experience pruning and/or removing trees using a rope and saddle method for tree climbing; OR successful completion of post-secondary coursework (nine (9) semester hours or twelve (12) quarter hours) in forestry, tree care, or related coursework and six (6) months of experience as stated above; OR successful completion of a vocational program in natural resources, forestry, or closely related field and six (6) months of experience as stated above. Possession of a valid driver'slicense. Some positions may requirea certificate of completion of an approved tree climbing course from an institute recognized by the Tree Care Industry Association or the International Society of Arboriculture. Some positions may require a valid, Class A or B, commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing operation of vehicles with air brakes.
