Primary Purpose: To promote and maintain a school environment that will ensure the safety and security of district personnel, students, and visitors to district campuses and facilities. Qualifications: * High School Diploma or GED * Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university Required; college hours in * Criminal Justice recommended * Valid Texas driver license; meet and maintain automobile insurance liability eligibility * School Resource Officer certification preferred * Mental Health Officer certification preferred * Current Texas Peace Officer license issued by the Texas Commission on Law * Enforcement * (TCOLE); Master Peace Officer certification required * Bondable, as required by Texas Education Code § 37.081 * Minimum of Fourteen years combined full time law enforcement experience Knowledge/Skills: * Possess an understanding of the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Family Code and Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code * Ability to pass required physical, psychiatric, and drug testing * Ability to record information and conduct presentations as it relates to Safety and Security * Ability to follow verbal and written instructions * Ability to work effectively with students and the public at large, exercising sensitivity to special needs children * Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing * Ability to problem solve, think critically, and manage conflict * Ability to think clearly and respond calmly and effectively in escalating situations * Working knowledge of criminal investigations, police reports, and criminal laws * Ability to successfully complete a one-year probationary period from the date of appointment * Comprehensive knowledge of modern leadership philosophies and methods as applied to local law enforcement administration * Comprehensive knowledge of department policies and procedures * Ability to manage critical incidents * Ability to analyze complex police problems and to adopt effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard for surrounding hazards / circumstances Essential Job functions: * Training and ability to subdue offenders, including use of firearms, non-lethal weapons, and handcuffs * Exhibit a high level of personal integrity and display high ethical standards * Operate a computer to develop databases and do word processing * Actively monitor interior and exterior of campus for unauthorized persons * Instruct in classroom setting (IE: traffic stop education, bullying, dating violence) * Respond to calls for service which may include theft, criminal mischief, disturbances, or other disorders on school district sites * Conduct initial and follow-up investigations (or assist with same) * Assist in developing and implementing school safety programs * Promote crime prevention and traffic safety programs * Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and campus policies affecting schools, including daily attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality * Assist other local law enforcement and fire agencies, as required or requested * Assist school administration with alleged criminal violations committed by students, when requested * Regularly confer with teachers, counselors, campus administrators, and other staff to identify problems and/or suspected criminal behavior * Maintain contact with and act as a liaison to local law enforcement agencies * Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including records of all cases investigated and reports required by law * Comply with all district routines and regulations * Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors, colleagues, students, and parents * Provide traffic control at athletic events, school closings/openings, or as otherwise required * Provide escorts or accompany students, parents, or district staff, as needed * Work effectively and efficiently with a team * Ability to act as a department Public Information Officer * Follow safety and security procedures * Other duties as assigned Supervisory Responsibilities: * Enforce policies, directives, standards and laws of the district and State * Responsible for oversight of sergeants, officers and other staff within the department, including planning daily work assignments, as well as short and long-term scheduling for officers * Establish responsibilities and organize work for officers, as required * In the absence of the Chief of Police, the Police Lieutenant is responsible for the 24-hour operations of the department and safety throughout the district Equipment Used: District vehicle and related equipment, handcuffs, issued firearms, fire extinguishers, security and alarm equipment, two-way radios, and computers and other office equipment Working Conditions Physical Demands/Mental Demands/Environmental Factors: The working conditions described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Regularly sit, talk or hear; frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; frequent repetitive hand motions; prolonged use of computer; occasionally lift and/or move up to 10- 50 pounds; occasionally required to stand, walk reach with hands and arms; vision abilities include close vision; and color vision, regularly work with frequent interruptions, maintain emotional control under stress; the noise level is usually moderate and full range of body motion. The employee may spend long hours in intense concentration which requires attention to detail. There are a number of deadlines associated with this position, which may cause significant stress. The employee must also deal with a wide variety of people on various issues. Occasionally exposed to communicable diseases and diseases, toxic substance, therapeutic preparations and other conditions common to health care environments. Maintain emotional control under stress. Constant contact involving students, district personnel, visitors, and other members of the public. Frequent district-wide travel. May be subject to hazardous working conditions, including violent and armed confrontations. Work outdoors in a variety of climate conditions. Prolonged sitting and standing; strenuous walking, running, or climbing. Prolonged hours; call back status for emergencies
