Overview

The Rail and Mechanical Business Unit (RMBU) Safety Manager (Rail Safety Manager) is a liaison position between RMBU operations and the Vice President of Safety and Compliance. The Rail Safety Manager will oversee the corporate safety program across the RMBU. The Rail Safety Manager will be responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals involved in activities under the RMBU portfolio and will work closely with the Company’s Rail Training Program Manger to develop and deliver applicable training programs. Primary work schedule will be business hours Monday – Friday (60-75% of the time). Must have the ability to work during weekend, evening, and/or overnight hours to conduct site visits or investigations. This may be up to 25-40% of the time but should generally be predicted and pre-scheduled.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Manage the Rail Safety Team
  • Develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive safety programs and policies.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to safety.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments for RMBU operations.
  • Identify potential hazards and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Stay abreast of industry regulations and standards related to safety.
  • Ensure that all RMBU activities comply with local, state and federal regulations.
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders to ensure a clear understanding of safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with other safety professionals to integrate environmental, construction and industrial safety into the overall rail safety program.
  • Conduct thorough investigations of incidents and near misses.
  • Implement corrective actions to prevent the recurrence of incidents.
  • Maintain detailed records of operations, including safety procedures, equipment inspections, and incident reports.
  • Analyze data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Working with applicable stakeholders, establish and enforce medical fitness standards for employees.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for incidents.
  • Working with the Company’s Rail Training Program Manager, coordinate and provide training for various levels of personnel.
  • Working with the Company’s Training and Qualifications Teams, assist in ensuring that all personnel involved in field activities hold the necessary certifications and qualifications.
  • Provide support in the inspection and maintenance of equipment to ensure it meets safety standards.
  • Regularly review and update safety procedures based on lessons learned and changes in industry standards.
  • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in safety practices.
  • Ensures the Rail Safety Team completes and performs job site kickoffs, visits, and audits in accordance with Company and client standards.
  • Conducts various internal safety and compliance-based assessments to audit conditions and safe work practices at jobsites.
  • Participate in meetings as applicable.
  • Attend, represent and participate in industry and client related safety meetings.
  • Communicate and work with various third parties, including commercial insurance brokers and providers.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • CSP, ASP, CHST or OHST or similar designation preferred.
  • Preferred 5-10 years of rail and/or construction safety experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Travel to project sites and regional offices (25% - 40%).
  • Ability to respond to afterhours emergencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet, and other basic office applications.
  • In-depth understanding of and experience with FRA OSHA, NFPA, DOT, EPA and other applicable regulations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, specifically in the English language.

  • Must possess working knowledge of industry requirements for equipment.
  • Ability to proactively identify issues and offer solutions.
  • Understanding of Worker’s Compensation Claims.
  • Ability to work with a team and independently
  • Working knowledge of Root Cause Analysis.
