Job Description SUMMARY The Deckhand is directly responsible and accountable to the Master or his or her relief, working directly under the Third Mate and following his or her instruction and or the instructions of the Master or Third Mate on watch. It is the duty of the Deckhand to learn by, on-the-job- training, cargo transfer operations which are covered by extensive laws and regulations of the US Coast Guard and other federal and local government agencies. The objective of the deckhand is learning safe, pollution-free to the environment and to the safety of the public with efficient cargo movement(s) and transfer(s). The Deckhand is primary accountable for his or her own health, safety, and cleanliness, must be familiar with Martin Marine policies SMS- Safety Management System, VRP- Vessel Response Plan procedures, safety rules and regulations and must abide by them at all times. The deckhand is responsible for the operational, maintenance duties, housekeeping and safety duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Operational a) Making up the tow b) Dropping, spotting, and switching barges at docks c) Assisting the vessel and tow in making locks d) The ability to handle lines and hoses in a safe and efficient manner e) Hook up the loading and discharging hoses f) The ability to learn work with complex pumping diagrams, pumps, valves, etc. g) Climb up and down, push knees, stairways, dock ladders etc h) Loading, off-loading, stowage of all supplies and equipment as directed i) Responding in a safe, efficient manner to mitigate pollution or damage in any shipboard emergency such as hatch overflow or holes in the barges 2. Maintenance Duties a) The ability to chip and apply paint to the vessel and barges in a steady manner and the upkeep of the draft marks b) The ability to change all engines oil and filters necessary to maintain a regular maintenance schedule c) Maintenance of machinery on vessels and barges d) Maintenance of greasing of winches vessel and tow, roller buttons etc.. 3. Housekeeping Duties a) Cleaning of the vessel b) Cleaning personal quarters and or maintaining the cleanliness of the unattended quarters c) Cleaning the wheelhouse when instructed d) Cleaning the galley, lavatories and companionways e) Share in the cooking and galley clean up f) Performing other cleaning chores as directed by the Master or relief 4. Safety a) Reporting any hazards or unsafe condition(s) to the Master and or relief and making on-the-spot correction(s) when capable b) Other duties as directed by the Master or his relief c) Must be able to perform essential emergency functions, such as handle fire-fighting/safety equipment, and to respond to orders given from the Master and or his relief for shipboard emergency response Job Requirements EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE High School Graduate or Equivalent, semi-skilled or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The Deckhand is a entry level position and must obtain a TWIC- Transportation Worker Identification Credential to hold a position on the vessel * Must be able to work 2 for 1schedule 28/14 * Must be able to work with a team , take direction from supervisors, keep required work schedules, focus attention on details and follow work rules
