Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight! Lunar: This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building the sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the Lunar Surface. As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers the candidate applies standard engineering techniques to design, install, modify, analyze, repair and test life support chemicals, analytical equipment, test rigs, and development hardware. This includes development, release, and support of engineering artifacts across the development cycle to support hardware fabrication, assembly, verification, test and operations. Implements operating procedures, resolves system malfunctions, and provide technical information. Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of designs or applications. Specifies system components or directs modification of products to ensure conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. Investigates equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and to make recommendations for maintenance activities. Specifically, you will share in the team's impact on all aspects of designing, building, testing and flying Environmental Control and Life Support (ECLS) and Crew Systems (CS) flight hardware. * The ECLS System is composed of the essential hardware to allow humans to safely inhabit space. ECLSS circulates air around the vehicle picking up carbon dioxide, humidity and trace contaminants to be scrubbed and provides oxygen for breathing. The internal cabin pressure is maintained and monitored. Clean drinking water is provided to the crew. The ECLS system also monitors air quality as well as emergencies such as rapid depressurization and fire and counteracts them. * Crew Systems is composed of various components and technologies necessary to support and ensure the physical and mental wellbeing of the crew throughout the duration of the mission. This includes waste management, potable water distribution, habitability and operations, crew mobility and restraints, hygiene and food supplies, and medical and health. Special Mentions * Relocation to Renton, WA required and provided * Travel expected up to 5 % of the time * Interviews will include a technical assessment Responsibilities include but are not limited to: * Both support and own the synthesis of life support chemicals in a wet lab * Develop a new analytical test rig to characterize chemical performance * Operate analytical equipment such as ion chromatography, inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP) and x-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), gas chromatography (GC) and Fourier Transform Inferred Spectroscopy (FTIR) to verify lot quality for flight, characterize fundamental properties, and support Lunar Permanence * Both lead and support testing of air revitalization and crew systems components in laboratory and integrated environments * Perform chemical modeling, calculations, and trades * Solve technical and program problems with the help of your team * Determine and manage schedule and budget for owned hardware * Work with suppliers and sub-contracts for components * Show system and component compliance to Blue and NASA technical requirements * Be the technical point of contact for your hardware * Adhere to Blue Leadership Principles Minimum Qualifications * BS in related engineering field * Experience in one or more areas of the product life cycle * Experience leading small technical teams * Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum. Preferred Qualifications * PhD in Aerospace or Chemical Engineering * Chemical uptake modeling * Simulink * MATLAB * R&D and test development experience * Wet lab experience * Chemical and mechanical Manufacturing * Experience with small project management * Worked on a crewed spaceflight program (spaceflight hardware development cycle) Compensation range for on site WA applicants is $111,690-$156,366 Other site ranges may differ Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.
