University Research Services & Administration Laboratory Animal Technician I, Division of Animal Resources Georgia State University This position provides animal care and maintains routine records according to clearly defined standard operating procedures, federal guidelines and regulations. Continual training is provided and work is reviewed on a regular basis through observation of procedures and review of records to ensure compliance. Errors in following verbal and written instructions regarding the basic care of the animals could jeopardize the health and safety of employees and animals. Such errors may result in injury, illness or loss of research. Employees face potential exposure to animals that may bite and/or scratch or be diseased. Employees lift, carry, push and pull heavy loads on an intermittent basis and work with chemicals and automated equipment. Operational hours are 9:00 AM - 5:45 PM and may work some weekends. The Schedule will be determined by the manager and the employee. WHAT MAKES University Research Services & Administration A GREAT PLACE? * A flexible work environment * Generous benefits, including health, dental, vision, tuition assistance, retirement, etc. * A knowledge-sharing organization that works collaboratively with diverse partners. * Professional development opportunity and mentorship * A rapidly growing center within an academic setting The Scope of Responsibility and duties includes but is not limited to: * Feeds and waters animals and performs other routine animal husbandry activities (cage changes, health checks, census) for non-human primates and rodents. * Observes and communicates animal health conditions to appropriate personnel. * Maintains routine record keeping of such items as environmental conditions, animal inventory and daily husbandry activities. * Sanitizes cage systems, animal rooms and support areas using automated and manual equipment. * Performs work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director/Supervisor. * Handles and restrains animals according to instructions and protocol. * May be responsible for euthanasia, limited anesthesia, physical exams, and administering medication according to veterinary direction. * Performs other professional related duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements: * High school diploma or GED and one year of related experience. Preferred Hiring Qualifications: * Experience with non-human primates * AALAS certification at ALAT level * Excellent written and verbal communication skills * Strong organizational skills and awareness for attention to the details * Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding animal care. * Ability to work well with others. * Ability to stand for extended periods. * Ability to pay attention to detail and work in a fast-paced environment * Ability to lift 50lbs or more. * Ability to frequently bend, crouch, and kneel.
