Job Responsibilities OUR MISSION AND VALUES The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) is the state's consumer protection agency. Established in 1974, SCDCA is charged with protecting consumers from inequities in the marketplace through advocacy, mediation, enforcement and education. With an unrivaled complaint processing portal, an award-winning communications staff and a unit dedicated specifically to assisting identity theft and scam victims, SCDCA offers invaluable services to every citizen in SC. We're looking for a motivated team member to support the agency's outreach and education efforts. If you're a people person and possess the skills outlined below, this may be the position for you. PRIMARY PURPOSE OF YOUR ROLE The Public Information Specialist will provide administrative support to the members of the agency's Public Information and Education Division and help educate consumers about scams, identity theft, financial literacy and more. Day-To-Day Activities: Under limited supervision of Division Director, incumbent will: Administrative * Provides assistance to public information division staff in responding to inquiries, including incoming media calls, emails and social media. * Reviews publications and promotional materials for updates, omissions, mistakes, conducting research to verify reliability of agency-created educational materials. * Maintains an inventory of promotional items and publications to support agency-wide outreach efforts. Makes ordering recommendations. * Maintains division calendar of all agency outreach events, ensuring proper information is recorded for each event. Coordinates with team to ensure timely and proper posting of presentations and events on the agency's website and social media platforms. * Develops and maintains a tracking system that includes, but is not limited to, presenter biographies, agency-approved power point presentations, and handouts. * Compiles appropriate information and data for internal and external agency reports. * Assists in monitoring press coverage. * Performs related duties as assigned. Outreach * Assists in facilitating, coordinating and presenting special events, educational workshops, seminars, and conferences. * Serves as the agency's Lifesmarts coordinator, soliciting participation from appropriate schools, clubs and other organizations. * Engages in active outreach for distribution of agency educational materials to stakeholder groups. * Maintains and routinely updates contact lists for stakeholder groups and builds effective working relationships with organizations around the state including industry groups, community organizations, faith-based organizations, local, state and federal agencies and other groups, ensuring that the agency is reaching a diverse constituency. Minimum and Additional Requirements MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: A high school diploma and relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: * Willingness and ability to periodically work out of normal business hours on nights and weekends. * Willingness and ability to travel. Occasional overnight travel to presentations and/or conferences may also be necessary. * Attention to detail. * Should have scrupulous focus on professionalism, including dress, timeliness, responsiveness to stakeholders and willingness to support colleagues on high priority needs. * Ability to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and deal courteously with the general public. * Ability to learn, organize and present written information in a clear, concise and accurate manner to best address target audience. * Knowledge of grammar and composition. * Ability to exercise judgment and discretion. * Ability to follow policies and procedures. * Possess a valid driver's license. * Ability to lift boxes and equipment weighing 15lbs. Preferred Qualifications SOFTWARE EXPERIENCE * Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. * Adobe Creative Suites experience preferred but not required. * Audiovisual/production experience preferred but not required.
