Overview: The South Carolina Department of Commerce is looking for an Economic Research and Data Analytics Intern to join our growing division of analysis experts. In this role, you will work closely with our team of economists and data analysts and participate in projects and activities that go beyond traditional analysis by employing the latest technologies with complex statistical methods to uncover insights and deliver easy-to-understand, actionable results through a variety of methods, from static reports and presentations to customized real-time dynamic dashboards. Responsibilities: * Design, develop, and execute research projects related to economics, finance, or public policy. * Implement projects that involve data collection, cleaning, analysis, and reporting using econometric modeling and statistical software to evaluate the impacts of changes over entire systems. * Conduct literature reviews and synthesize research findings to inform project designs and analysis. * Work alongside economic and research teams to identify innovative solutions, contribute ideas for improving research and data analysis processes to support Agency-wide initiatives. * Package ideas in a logical, compelling, and influential way, and present insights to various audiences, including team members and Agency executives. * Develop deliverables which communicate results in an easy-to-understand manner via research briefings, reports, presentations, fact sheets, visual, interactive, or other dynamic methods. Minimum and Additional Requirements A high school diploma and relevant program experience. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required program experience. Preferred Qualifications * Have or are pursuing an undergraduate or advanced degree in a quantitative field (such as Statistics, Economics, Finance, Computer Science, etc.). * Knowledge of economic theory and policy and familiarity with research methods and literature review techniques. * Strong analytical skills and passion for identifying trends and unique solutions through data analysis. * Experience using statistical and data exploration tools and techniques (such as SQL, R, Python, SAS, STATA, Tableau, PowerBI, etc.). * Desire to make a significant impact in an empowering work environment. * Commitment to continually building on existing knowledge and skills to be up to date on the latest technological innovations. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies to convey knowledge and concepts. Additional Comments * Local candidates preferred. * Immediate start for the duration of the fall term preferred, with agency's option to continue the position through spring term. * Position is on-site, in the Department's offices at 1201 Main Street, Columbia, SC. Remote or hybrid work is not an option. Position does not include benefits.
