Description Join Our Team as a Teaching Artist at PHAME! PHAME seeks a Teaching Artist to serve as director of our Rock Ensemble and the co-leader of our Choir beginning Fall Term 2024. About PHAME PHAME is a fine and performing arts academy serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Offering three ten-week terms of arts-based classes each year, as well as a rigorous performance program, PHAME empowers students to learn new skills, take artistic risks, and build lasting relationships with people who share their experience of having a disability. PHAME is built upon the belief that art is for everyone, and that our community is stronger when it champions opportunities for all. With that in mind, PHAME brings passion, joy, and rigor to arts education and performance. Job Overview * Job Title: Teaching Artist, Rock Ensemble & Choir * Job Type: Part-Time/ Non-Exempt. Approximately 3.75 hours of teaching per week (including set up and tear down), and approximately 2 hours of planning per week (Teaching Artists are allotted 10 hours of planning per class per term unless otherwise advised). Additional hours for events. * Job Location: In-person, 1535 NE 17th, Portland, OR 97232 * Benefits Include: * Holiday pay: Employee will be paid for regularly scheduled hours that fall on PHAME holidays. However, if classes are not scheduled (for instance, there are no classes the week of Thanksgiving), employees are not paid. * Reports to: Director of Performance & Partnerships (Rock Ensemble) and Education Manager (Choir) * Pay rate: * Teaching (as well as classroom set up and tear down), rehearsals, and gigs are paid at $30/hour * Planning and meetings are paid at $20/hour * Working hours: * Rock Ensemble rehearsals, Tuesdays 2:30-4:30 PM * 2:30-2:45 PM set-up * 2:45-4:15 PM instruction time * 4:15-4:30 PM clean-up * Choir class, Thursdays 3:45-5:30 PM * 3:45-4:00 PM set-up * 4:00-5:15 PM instruction time * 5:15-5:30 PM clean-up time * Rock Ensemble Gigs and Performances * Winter Concert Dress Rehearsal Dec 9, time TBA * Winter Concert Performance Dec 10, time TBA * Other gigs, rehearsals, and planning meetings as assigned * All Hands Meetings * Fridays 10 AM-Noon over Zoom, Sept 27, Nov 1, Dec 6, future term dates TBA This position is scheduled only during PHAME's terms (except for occasional events and gigs): * Fall Term: September 30 - December 12, 2024 (No programming during Thanksgiving week) * Winter Term: January 13 - March 20, 2025 * Spring Term: March 31 - June 5, 2025 * Summer and future term hours are TBD Teaching Artist Job Summary PHAME Teaching Artists design and execute lesson plans that focus on artistic development and utilize repetition and differentiated instruction to accommodate students' different learning styles. In addition to focusing on the fine and performing arts, they incorporate skill building around four key areas: striving for excellence, teamwork and communication, self-awareness, and self-advocacy. Teaching Artists manage the classroom environment either in person or online, including class activities, set-up and tear-down, and equipment retrieval and storage. Teaching Artists teach one or more classes (either online or in-person) each term. Teaching Artists who join the PHAME team can suggest new classes for future terms and may have the potential to expand their course loads and hours. Assignment Details PHAME is currently hiring a Teaching Artist for two classes: Rock Ensemble and Choir. This Teaching Artist will be the Director of the Rock Ensemble, with support from an Assistant Director. For Choir, they will be a co-leader, working in collaboration with one other co-leader. Rock Ensemble is a 15-20 member performance group that specializes in pop and rock music. It is a "Lab" level class, which means that it is designed to explore advanced concepts and specific skills related to a particular art form or performance skill. Lab classes have opportunities to perform publicly; Rock Ensemble performs at PHAME events and is hired by other organizations throughout the year to perform for their audiences. The Director of the Rock Ensemble will lead the ensemble in learning and perfecting songs during weekly rehearsals, with support from the Assistant Director, and may be assigned additional rehearsals outside of the normal meeting time. The Director of the Rock Ensemble will work closely with PHAME's Director of Performance and Partnerships (DPP) to determine which songs the ensemble is focusing on, and to ensure that the ensemble is prepared for upcoming events and gigs. As events and gigs approach, the Director of the Rock Ensemble will be responsible for communicating with students about the event/gig details. The Director of the Rock Ensemble accompanies the ensemble at these performances. Choir is a 30-40 member choral group made up of vocalists of different experience and skill levels, with a focus on pop music. Choir is an "exploratory" class, meaning that students do not need any prior experience. The majority of class time is spent singing as a group. The two co-teachers work together to run class, with the aim of supporting students in advancing their group-singing skills. Choir is a "hybrid" class, meaning some students attend in person and some attend online (a PHAME Campus Coordinator helps support the online classroom). Essential Job Functions All classes * Develop and submit syllabus for each class (PHAME provides a syllabus template) to appropriate supervisor prior to the beginning of each term. * Work with supervisor(s) to ensure that needed class supplies and equipment are procured. * Teach class weekly (in collaboration with co-teacher, if applicable); execute set up and tear down * Send class welcome emails to students prior to term start as instructed by PHAME's Enrollment Manager. * Teach students artistic skills and techniques while incorporating skill-building around the four key areas of the core curriculum. * Utilize accommodations and modifications to ensure a successful class experience for each student. * Incorporate assistance from volunteers and/or interns in the classroom as applicable. * Attend monthly team meetings. * Review and contribute to internal document used by all staff for sharing insights and strategies for working with and accommodating specific students. * Complete class assessments. * Return class supplies and equipment to PHAME; assist with the collection of supplies and equipment borrowed by students. Rock Ensemble only Class time * Rehearse songs from the Rock Ensemble's existing extensive repertoire with the aim of perfecting them for performance. Rock Ensemble may learn up to two new songs per term at the approval of the DPP. * Work with individual student performers to provide feedback and set individual goals in performance. Events & Gigs (Winter Concert, Gala, outside gigs, etc) * In collaboration with the DPP, create and finalize a set list that includes songs already in Rock Ensemble's repertoire, as well as limited new songs. * Assess the need for additional rehearsals outside of class time and work with the DPP to create an additional rehearsal schedule, if needed. * Communicate with student performers in advance to ensure they understand the event logistics. * Execute additional out of class rehearsals as needed, as assigned and approved by the DPP. * Lead performances at events and gigs, ensuring music is presented as planned. * Work closely with production staff and technicians at event venues, and prior to the event if requested by the DPP. Miscellaneous * Attend regular team meetings as well as 1:1 meetings with the DPP. * Attend monthly "All Hands" meetings. * Audition vocal students for admission into class. * Stay informed about trends and developments in the world of music. Skills/Qualifications * Ability to create curriculum for assigned class(es) * Experience working professionally in the artistic medium of assigned class(es) * Choral leadership experience including conducting, vocal pedagogy, and music selection * Teaching experience * Basic keyboard skills * Experience working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred * At least three years of progressively responsible work experience * Commitment to arriving prepared and on time to scheduled classes, rehearsals, and meetings * Strong communication skills; openness to take feedback * Commitment to PHAME's mission of empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live full, creative lives through arts education and performance Education & Other Requirements * Bachelor's or higher degree in music, or equivalent experience. * Must be a resident of Oregon or Washington. Working Conditions & Physical/Cognitive Requirements This work is primarily performed in person at Grace Memorial Church, where PHAME runs its Education Program. The majority of the work involves moving around a classroom, and moving/handling program supplies and equipment up to 35 lbs. Event and gig work will occur at other venues. This position requires complex decision making. This position has minimal meetings. This is an in-person position, however some meetings may be online. When virus levels rise, we may require staff to answer simple health questions, submit to temperature checks, and/or wear a mask while on campus. Additionally, PHAME has a strict stay-home policy for staff who test positive for Covid. Our campuses have high-level air filtration. While PHAME does not require proof of vaccination for Covid or other easily transmittable diseases, we strongly suggest that staff (and students) be vaccinated.
