Business Insider is hiring a senior correspondent to join our transportation team. Business Insider is for people who are driven, optimistic and always looking forward. Our mission is to inspire action through thought-provoking stories. We tell our audience what they want and need to know to improve their lives and the world with storytelling that is accessible, smart, sometimes unexpected, and always helpful. Our team members embody and uphold Business Insider's three core values: we are all one team, we are effective, and we strive to get better every day. The Role & Team: Business Insider's Transportation team covers big metal things that move and the industries built around them, with a special focus on aviation, cruising, and autos. The team writes a mix of breaking news, analysis, and reported stories about companies including Tesla, Ford, GM, Rivian, Delta Airlines, Boeing, United Airlines, American Airlines, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Lines. Reporters on the team may also produce visual features and reviews on innovative new planes, cars, and cruise ships. The senior correspondent would focus on the aviation and auto industry. They would write first-person reviews and comparisons of planes, EVs, and gas-powered vehicles. This role is ideal for someone who loves travel, as the reporter will be encouraged to pitch and take trips across the US and the world and write reviews of their experiences. They would also drive some of the most-talked-about cars on the road today, and write about their nuances. The senior correspondent should be adept at spotting industry trends and writing sharp analysis to help readers make sense of the news and how it might impact them. They should have existing sources within both industries, or experience building sources. Professional experience taking photos is not required, but you must be willing to learn. Examples of stories you would be charged with writing: * 'The Cinderella ride is over for Tesla': How Elon Musk turned his crown jewel into an overpriced jalopy * A Rivian customer waited 3 years for his dream car. It died within days. * I got an early look at Volvo's $34,950 electric SUV and saw why it's one of the best Tesla rivals yet * I flew on Delta's newest jet, the controversial Airbus A220-300, and it's my new favorite airliner in the US * I flew business class on 6 airlines this year and there was a huge difference between the best and the worst * I drove a $98,000 F-150 Lightning Platinum and saw what Ford's fanciest electric truck is like * I road-tripped in Toyota's new electric SUV. Its painfully slow charging and short range made the drive take forever. * I flew on Singapore's Airbus A380 for 12 hours in economy from Germany to Singapore. The seat was surprisingly amenity-heavy and made the long trek easy. * After driving 25 electric vehicles, these are my 7 favorites This role can be hybrid, reporting to any of our US offices, or fully remote, and is union eligible. Key responsibilities: * Pitch and write original stories about the aviation and auto industries * Cover consumer-focused stories on passenger and driver experiences * Spot trends bubbling up in the aviation and auto industry before competitors * Travel in, photograph, and write about airplanes and cars * Maintain a relationship with press fleet coordinators * Write a mix of stories, from news posts to visual features, with turnarounds ranging from roughly an hour to several days * Track down, contact, and interview sources in the field or online The ideal candidate has: * An interest in reviewing cars, trucks, SUVs, and airplanes * A strong writing voice and can independently come up with smart and differentiated takeaways for reviews * Robust interviewing skills for generating impactful as-told-to essays * Keen attention to detail to help immerse readers in your reviews * Strong organizational skills that allow you to balance desk and field reporting * Experience taking publication-quality photos * A driver's license * The ability to work quickly and collaboratively with a fast-paced team * Passion for learning the intricacies of a complex industry and its players * A love of Business Insider and our mission to serve readers with the information and inspiration they need in a way that's accurate, fair, fast, and fun Salary & benefits: * Salary: $125,000-$140,000 (dependent on skills, experience, and competencies) * Unlimited PTO, 10 paid holidays, and 16 weeks of parental leave * Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans * Matched and vested 401k plan * Access to resources for financial planning guidance, family planning services, mental health reachout and Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) * Additional benefits include commuter benefits, phone reimbursement, gym membership discounts, and more Insider is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and, when making employment decisions, does not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, sex, sexual orientation, age, nationality or national origin, religion, disability, familial status, and military or veteran status. We encourage members of traditionally underrepresented groups to apply. Are you passionate about this opportunity, but worried that you don't have 100% of the experience we're looking for? We still want to hear from you! Apply online and let us know why you would make a great addition to the Insider community.
