JOB DESCRIPTION * FULL TIME The Theatre Scene Shop Supervisor manages the construction of theatre scenery, assists in the construction, placement, and rigging of scenery for departmental productions, performs general maintenance and upkeep of shop machinery and tools, helps to plan and organize the construction projects, and instructs and supervises student workers in the construction of theatre scenery. RESPONSIBILITIES * Provides a comprehensive learning experience for students hired via workstudy, and/ or enrolled in theatre practicum courses by instructing then in the technical aspects and safety procedures of theatre set construction, assigns tasks to student assistants and crews, supervises students in the operation of various power tools such as power saws, table saws, radial arm saws, and gas or electric welders, evaluating the students' work and providing an assessment to faculty. * Ensures the production of theatre scenery sets on schedule by determining the kind and amount of materials required, the tools or equipment needed, the order and sequence involved in the fabrication of single items or complete units, and the time required to meet production deadlines. * Produces quality theatre scenery and sets that complement and support theatre presentations by assisting the Technical Director, Scenic Designer and Director of Theatre in the development of desired product. * Under the supervision of the Technical Director, navigates the activities of the scene shop by planning and organizing construction project utilizing verbal instructions, rough sketches, & basic blueprints - as provided by the Technical Director &/ or Designer. * Assists the Technical Director &/ or Lighting Designer with lighting equipment maintenance, circuitry, and hanging fixtures/ equipment outlined in provided light plots. * Seeks the most artificially appropriate solution in the completion of the projects by utilizing industry - accepted practices and tolerances when working with such materials as wood, metal, plastics, and canvas. * Promotes preventive maintenance as a strategy in maintaining hand and power tools as well as gas and electric welders by performing and directing the routine maintenance and cleaning of all tools and equipment in the scene shop. * Supports the School of Worship, Media, and Performing Arts presentations by assisting in the setup of stage units, directing the placement and rigging of scenery, and supervising the dismantling and storage of stage units following the production. * Ensures an accident-free learning and work environment by enforcing safety rules and supervising students when operating scenery shop tools and equipment. * Ensures the efficient daily operation of the theatre scenery shop by maintaining a sufficient inventory of supplies, construction materials and equipment, and purchasing replacement items as needed. * Provides students in the technical courses with an understanding of tool usage and safety practices, basic scenic construction, and rigging system operations. * Assists in shaping the final scenic designs by providing construction advisement and artistic input to the designer and Technical Director. * Along with the Technical Director, assesses the qualifications of potential student employees to determine their qualifications and their specific work assignments by interviewing them. * Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development, of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds. * Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/ or courses as required by the Department Head. * Contributes to the overall success of the School of Worship. Media, and Performing Arts by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned. REQUIREMENTS Education: High School Diploma or GED. Undergraduate degree in Theatre or related field preferred. License or Certification Requirements: Electrical Apprentice Card Must possess a valid Oklahoma driver's license and have an excellent driving record for the purpose of driving University leased vehicles. Experience / Skills / Abilities: Ideal entry level position for recent college Theatre graduate pursuing a career in Technical Direction, Scenic Design, or Lighting Desing. Mechanical skills in the use of hand and power tools, and gas electric welder are required. The ability to read and understand floor plans, color renderings, electrical schematics, and advanced construction plans or blueprints is required. Strong oral, mathematics, and written communications skills are required. The ability to instruct on material relevant to technical production labs is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is requires. Supervisory skills are required. Responsibility to direct the work of student workers or temporary or part-time workers requires ability to delegate and clearly communicate expectations and goals. The nature of supervision is largely confined to assigning tasks to others. Responsibilities may include tracking budgeted spending, limited purchasing authority, and tracking inventory such as scenery and props utilized by the Theatre program. Time sensitive projects and productions require the ability to be flexible and collaborate/ coordinate with the Technical Director, faculty, and/ or students. Ta this level, contacts involve considerable interpersonal skill involving cooperation and coordination and may involve the organization of activities of programs requiring working relationships among several parties. While contacts may require some level of persuasion, potential for conflicts and disputes are relatively minor. Stressful situations may present themselves but maintaining a congenial and professional disposition is paramount. While daily activities include interaction/ guidance with the Technical Director, they have responsibilities outside of the Scene Shop. The ability to work independently on Departmental projects and productions requires personal motivation and individual accountability. Theatre procedures and standards exist, bit latitude in applying procedures and selecting a sequence of activities may be exercised. In the absence of the Technical Director, the employee uses judgment in interpreting and adapting guidelines such as regulations, precedents, and work directions for application to specific cases or problems. The employee must have the ability to analyze results and recommend changes. The work includes various duties involving different and unrelated processes and methods. Decisions regarding hat needs to be done depend upon knowledge of the duties, priorities, commitments, policies, and program goals of the supervisor and the department and involve the analysis of the subject, phase, or issues involved in each project or assignment, and the course of action may have to be selected from many alternatives. The ability to discern and make such decisions is required. Physical and Environmental Demands: The ability to lift and carry materials weighing between 50 - 100 pounds on a daily basis is required. The position requires prolonged standing, frequent bending or stooping and climbing of steps and ladders, crawling, bending, stooping, kneeling, walking, pushing, pulling, handling by seizing, holding, grasping, or turning hands, repeated reaching by extending hands or arms in any direction, good hearing, near, far, depth and color vision, and regular exposure to electrical hazards. Occasionally may be required to work over stage or auditorium seating at heights of 25ft or more. The work area involves moderate discomfort and/ or risk such as from moving machinery, occasional work with hazardous substances, or moderate levels of noise. The work may require wearing of protective gear. The work area is generally adequately lighted and ventilated but may involve uncomfortable temperatures at times. Work requires maximum exertion on a daily basis. Prolonged and frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching, climbing, crawling, and/ or heavy lifting represent normal workday activities. The job requires frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 75 pounds without assistance, and periodic lifting of heavier objects with or without assistance. The Scene Shop Supervisor has considerable ongoing responsibility for maintaining building security and public safety.
