Job Summary
A current Oberlin College student is sought for a part-time position at the Allen Memorial Art Museum to aid the Assistant Curator of European and American Art (before 1900) in collections research, preparations for upcoming exhibitions, and other duties as assigned. Updating provenance records for the permanent collection will constitute a large part of the position, necessitating diligence and attention to detail. Mentorship and professionalization are important components of the position for those interested in museum careers. The position is 10 hours/week for the fall 2024 semester with the possibility of renewal in the spring.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
* General research on the European and American art collection, including provenance
* Updating records and creating lists on the internal collection database, The Museum System
* Learn and follow NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act) guidelines to assist with the research and inventory of Indigenous objects in the Museum's collection
* Art handling and pulling works from storage locations for study and exhibition preparation
* Developing social media posts and public-facing materials
* Liaising with faculty and students who are coming to the AMAM to engage with the collection
* Research and label writing for exhibitions
* Other projects based on need or student interest
Qualifications
Strong writing skills are required for this position, excellent organization, communication, and the ability to work independently on both short and long-term tasks. Completion of at least two courses related to early modern European and American art history is preferred, but not required. Reading proficiency in another language is preferred, but not required.
