Position Information Position Title Special Collections Assistant Department Name Adams Library Academic or Calendar Year Calendar Scheduled Work Week / Hours / Area * 19 hours/week scheduled between Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm. * Hours are only when the fall/spring semester classes are in session. Position Overview Rhode Island College's James P. Adams Library seeks a part-time Special Collections Assistant to support the Digital Archivist & Special Collections Librarian with archival processing, digitization, research, and other projects to promote and facilitate access to the library's special collections. This position is term, lasting one academic year. Essential Duties * Process, arrange, and describe archival and other Special Collections materials composed of a variety of print and electronic formats, following national standards and best practices. * Staff the Reading Room to assist and monitor researchers as needed. * Digitize print and photographic materials. * Create metadata for digital collections. * Assist Digital Archivist and Special Collections Librarian with archival instruction sessions. * Perform other duties and assist with other special collections projects as assigned. Occasional Duties Other duties as assigned. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities * Attention to detail. * Basic computer skills, including familiarity with the MS Office suite, and willingness to learn new software tools. * Excellent communication, analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills with the ability to present information and ideas clearly and concisely. * Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. * Library special collections or archives experience, or relevant coursework completed. Required Qualifications * Bachelor's degree. Preferred Qualifications * Enrollment in a master's program for library and information science specializing in archives or recent graduate with an MLS/MLIS. * Knowledge of contemporary archival practices, trends, and emerging technologies for managing, processing, and providing access to archival collections in physical and digital formats. * Knowledge of DACS, EAD, and other archival and rare materials best practices and descriptive and encoding standards. * Strong customer service skills including the ability to be responsive to service needs of constituents in a courteous and consistent manner. * Experience using databases. * Familiarity with Photoshop and other Adobe applications. Environmental Conditions The employee is not exposed to known adverse environmental conditions.
