As a Training Vessel Captain at SMA you will be responsible for being a key member of the team that kicks fenders and takes names. The Training Vessel Captain is responsible for the safe navigation and operations of the vessel while supervising the crew, instructor(s), passengers and students onboard. They are in charge of all navigation, health, safety, security, communications and emergencies onboard. The training vessel Maritime Instructor is an 82' ex-USCG Point-Class cutter that is used in our 1-year Marine Deck Technology and Marine Engineering Technology Programs to give students underway experience onboard a commercial vessel. It is powered by twin 800hp Caterpillar diesel propulsion engines and two Detroit diesel generators. The vessel COI requires a Master and a Deckhand for voyages of less than 12hrs. This position is 24hrs/week maximum (average 12hrs/week) during the Winter and Spring quarters (8am-8pm, Tuesday and Thursday, during the two 11-week quarters). Additional hours may be added for special cruises but is not common. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. The employer will not sponsor applicants for work visas. The Training Vessel Captain is a part time / hourly employee at Seattle Maritime Academy paying $37 an hour. What you will be working on: * Supervise all operations onboard the training vessel while standing up to a 12-hour watch. * Operate the vessel in compliance with all government regulations, college policies & procedures, guidelines, requirements, and regulations. * Coordinate with the Port Captain and Port Engineer in the management and upkeep of vessel requirements and operational needs. * Conduct a pre-underway safety meeting with the vessel crew and passengers. * Complete all pre-underway and shut-down checklists. * Support instructors to enrich the learning environment and participate in training students in helm, look-out, navigation, mooring and emergency drill procedures. * Make on-board vessel inspections to ensure all lifesaving, fire-fighting, and critical equipment are in good working order, equipment is stowed properly and the vessel is clean including but not limited to inspecting the vessels before getting underway and at the end of the training day. * Use all means necessary to safety navigate the vessel, including but not limited to monitoring navigational equipment, weather, tides and Notice to Mariners as necessary to support navigational decisions. * Maintain the official wheelhouse logbook, radio log and reporting documents. What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience) * 2 years of experience operating commercial vessels as Master or Mate. * Valid USCG MMC with National Master 100 ton Inland or greater. * Valid USCG Medical Certificate. * Valid 1st Aid and CPR Certifications. * Valid FCC Bridge to Bridge Radio operators license. * Submit to and pass a background check. * Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing. Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
