Description This position assists in planning, designing, and implementing aquatic related programs and special events at the City of Columbia swimming pools to include training and program development with the integration of wellness services; performs lifeguard duties; and ensures the pool is clean and safe. The incumbent works within broad policy and organizational guidelines and does independent planning and implementation, reporting progress of major activities through periodic conferences and meetings. The work is considered light-to-medium in nature and involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy. The work requires the following physical abilities to perform the essential job functions: balancing, climbing, grasping, handling, hearing, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. Work environment may involve exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, toxic/caustic chemicals, violence; and involves an environment where errors can lead to significant physical or mental consequences for one's self or others. Essential Job Functions * Provides leadership and sets the tone of the facility that encourages and promotes an environment of creativity, attention detail, friendliness and customer service interactions * Assists in planning instructional programs, collaborative programs with community organizations * Assists in developing a system for recording enrollment and attendance plus prepares monthly and quarterly reports to supervisor * Assists in class/program participation surveys quarterly to respond to market needs and participant input and evaluates classes/programs to determine effectiveness and relevance * Assists in coordinating fitness and recreational activities such as lap swim, open swim classes swim team practices and wellness/rehabilitation programs to maximize utilization and profitability * Performs lifeguard duties * Surveys the pool to ensure the safety of swimmers and cleanliness of pool * Provides instruction and guide learning for youth and adult populations including those with special needs * Assists in coordination and promotion of at least four special aquatic events per year * Implements accommodations to meet the special needs and swimming abilities of disabled or challenged groups or individuals * Conducts needs assessments to determine current needs and future programs * Attends meetings as requested and assists with programs and special events * Promotes and enforce all aquatic and facility safety rules; * Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Minimum Requirements to Perform Work * High school diploma or GED * One (1) year of relevant prior experience * Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License; * Valid American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Knowledge of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, and/or calculating ratios, rates and percentages; * Ability to express communication, motivational and organizational skills; * Ability gather, organize, analyze, examine or evaluate data or information and may prescribe action based on such data or information; * Ability to provide information, guidance or assistance to people to directly facilitate task accomplishment; may give directions or assignments to helpers or assistants; * Ability to handle or use machines, tools or equipment requiring brief instruction or experience, such as computers for data entry, fax machines, copiers, telephones or similar equipment; may service office machines, including adding paper and changing toner; * Ability to perform semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems. Knowledge of comprehensive aquatic programs including accepted standards, principles, and concepts; * Ability to read routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writing routine sentences and completing routine job forms and incident reports; speaking routine sentences using proper grammar; * Ability to perform clerical, manual or technical tasks requiring a wide range of procedures and requiring intensive understanding of a restricted field or complete familiarity with the functions of a unit or small division of an operating agency; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure; * Ability to guide others, requiring frequent decisions affecting co-workers and others who depend on the service or product; works in a somewhat fluid environment with rules and procedures but with many variations from the routine.
