Job Location: Remote - US Pay: Non-Exempt role, $24.04 - $31.25 DOE Summary of Overall Job: e.Republic is a leading organization focused on empowering state and local government and education through data, media, and events. We are committed to providing insightful guidance, promoting innovation, and forging connections that drive the adoption of technology solutions in government. The staff writer's primary responsibility will be to conceive, report and write articles about a variety of policy areas for all GOVERNING (and e.Republic, as needed) editorial products as directed by editors. The beat that this position will focus on will be state and local finance, management and administration news. Secondary beats include workforce and education. The writer is responsible for developing and maintaining a network of sources to support original reporting and to have an active social media presence. The position will also require breaking news coverage as needed. Essential Duties: * Report and craft captivating web stories, including news briefs and bylined articles in coordination with editors * Collaborate with the editorial team to produce magazine features that leap off the page to captivate our readers * Embrace the power of multimedia storytelling with web stories, online, multimedia, data and visualizations * Exercise your prowess with sound news judgment * Innovate and ideate story ideas for the magazine and web * Nurture contacts and develop beat coverage as assigned * Attend events and conferences to generate web articles and news items * Produce 3-5 multi-source stories per week Skills/Qualifications: * Able to write 3-5 clear, compelling multi-source stories a week * Strong analytical and interpretive skills * Able to distill complex technical information into concise, technically accurate but reader-friendly prose * Keen understanding of education issues, institutions and technology * Skilled at interviewing, over the phone and in-person, professionals in K-12, higher education and the ed-tech industry * 2 years of journalistic experience, preferably covering education * Knowledge of journalistic standards and AP style * Able to work under strict deadlines * Able to post stories through content management system and commercial social networks * SEO experience a plus (can be trained if needed) * Must be in a work environment with reliable internet access This Job Description is subject to change.
