The NC Wildlife Resources Commission Mission Statement is to conserve North Carolina's wildlife resources and their habitats and provide programs and opportunities that allow hunters, anglers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy wildlife-associated recreation.  The Commission is the regulatory agency responsible for the enforcement of N.C. fishing, hunting, trapping and boating laws. The NCWRC employs 700 full-time staff across the state, including wildlife and fisheries biologists and technicians, wildlife law enforcement officers, wildlife educators, communication specialists, customer service, information technology, and administrative professionals.   The NC Wildlife Resources Commission's Inland Fisheries Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State's freshwater fishes, mussels, crayfish and supporting aquatic habitats through fisheries research, fisheries management, hatchery operation, and habitat conservation.   The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is accepting applications for a Wildlife Conservation Technician I-Fish Culturist for the Inland Fisheries Division.  The Wildlife Conservation Technician I-Fish Culturist is responsible for performance of tasks resulting in production and distribution of  coldwater fishes. These activities include propagation, rearing, transportation, and distribution of the appropriate species, number, and sizes of selected fish species, and operation and maintenance of supporting facilities and equipment. The duties associated with fish culture include: * Maintenance of rearing environments, water quality assessment, fish health management, brood fish maintenance, fish feeding, fish spawning, and fish harvesting. The individual in this position will clean ponds, raceways, tanks, and troughs as needed.   * Harvesting of appropriate fish from pond or raceway environments for final distribution and loading correct species, quantities and sizes of fish onto distribution trucks.   * Safe operation of a two-ton stocking truck to transport fish to specific locations while monitoring the condition of fish and will then distribute fish into public waters. Attentiveness to water quality, dissolved oxygen, fish health and nutrition is required in all phases of the production cycle.  * Preparation of routine reports and interaction with the public frequently. * Maintenance of hatchery grounds, buildings, and equipment.   Maintenance activities include mowing, trimming, leaf removal, landscaping, and application of agricultural chemicals.  A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week (7:30 am - 4:00 pm).  This position is subject to be called back at any time.  Hours and days vary with special assignments requiring on occasion night work, weekend duty, working on holidays,  extended days, and overnight travel.   This position will be based out of the WRC Bobby N. Setzer State Fish Hatchery located in Pisgah Forest, NC (Transylvania County).  To receive credit for all of your work history and credentials, you must list the information on the application form. Any information listed under the text resume section or on an attachment will not be considered for qualifying credit.  Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possess all of the following:    * Knowledge of the principles and techniques of fish culture or biology; * Experience operating or maintaining a variety of equipment and tools used at a fish hatchery (ex. farm tractor, fish feeder, lawn mower, stocking truck, other motor vehicles, lab equipment, power and manual hand tools); and * Ability to collect and record physical, chemical, and biological data.  Management Preferences:  * Knowledge of coldwater fish culture;  * Ability to construct, maintain, and repair hatchery equipment, buildings, and other facilities; * Ability to sex, age, and identify fish; * Ability to utilize office technology; and * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with hatchery staff, other agency staff, cooperating agencies and organizations, and the general public. Special Requirement: * Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 90 days of hire. Candidate must present proof of a valid Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record.   Physical Requirements: * Ability to work primarily outdoors, in all kinds of weather conditions; * Ability to perform manual labor, lifting medium to heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds daily; and * Ability to wear safety equipment and follow established safety regulations and procedures.
