Job Description Come join the Research and Modeling Department in Extreme Event Solutions at Verisk's Boston office and contribute to building catastrophe models and products suited to address risk estimation in a changing climate. In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop scientifically sound, statistically robust, and computationally efficient models for flood-causing precipitation. Together with other scientists in the team you will be working on the development and implementation of innovative solutions and cutting-edge sciences to serve Verisk's hydrometeorological risk assessment capabilities, and support client-facing teams on precipitation related issues. About the Day to Day Responsibilities of the Role * Provide domain knowledge expertise needed to build scientifically sound representations of extreme precipitation. * Collect and analyze a wide range of in-situ and gridded precipitation datasets. * Develop, enhance, and validate statistical and physically based precipitation models, with a focus on the practical applications of stochastic simulation, statistical downscaling, and risk assessment. * Coordinate with other meteorologists, hydrologists, and hydraulic engineers to translate stochastic precipitation simulations into a fully comprehensive view of precipitation flood risk across the globe. * Assess and advise on the latest climate change research as it pertains to the impacts on precipitation extremes. * Occasionally operate in real or near-real time to obtain the most accurate representation of significant precipitation events on tight deadlines. * Present models and relevant analytics to clients, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders. #LI-SM1 #LI-Hybrid Qualifications About You and How You Can Excel in This Role * Advanced degree in hydrometeorology, atmospheric and climate sciences, applied statistics, or related fields with experience in weather and climate extremes. PhD preferred, but exceptional MS applicants with relevant experience may also be considered. * In-depth knowledge of probability theory and (geo)statistics. Experience with statistical analysis, downscaling, or stochastic simulation of precipitation would be considered a significant advantage. * Strong programming skills gained through practical experience using high-level language and tools such as R, Python, MATLAB, C++, or FORTRAN. Experience with collaborative code development and system scripting and familiarity with version control would be considered a plus. * Experience with gathering, integrating, and critically analyzing data from relevant sources of natural hazard information such as national and international agencies, insurance data, and private entities in both a real-time and historical context. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially presenting to diverse audiences. * Highly motivated with the ability to achieve goals and meet deadlines while working on multiple tasks. Project management experience would be considered a plus.
