Posting Summary Position Title Mellon Visiting Scholar-in-Residence of Black Intellectual Thought (B.I. T.) in Exponential Honors Program FLSA Department Office Of College Of Arts & Sciences Job Summary Xavier University of Louisiana invites applications for a one-year Visiting Scholar-in-Residence of Black Intellectual Thought in the Exponental Honors Program on a 12-month contract, to begin August 2024. The University's Exponential Honors Program will design a unique honors academic program supported by an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant that aims to revive the study, teaching and research that connects Black Intellectual Thought. The Visiting Scholar-in-Residence will support the teaching and study of the traditions that Black thinkers have used to adapt, expand, and employ Humanities-based approaches in the practical work that allowed the Black intelligentsia to bridge the academy with the community. We seek candidates whose research and teaching focus on and interdisciplinary approach to Black Intellectual Traditions. In the legacy of Du Bois, who is one prominent example of how Black Intellectual Traditions are rooted in Humanities-based approaches, but there are much more, the Visiting Scholar-in-Residence will work to restore the teaching of the great Black Intellectual Thinkers like Du Bois, but also including the work of Black feminist thinkers, from Anna Julia Cooper all the way to present day Patricia Hill Collins and bell hooks; and to Black queer thought in the writings of James Baldwin, whose father was a New Orleans preacher. While Du Bois was Harvard educated, Baldwin did not complete college, yet both are foundational to the study of Black Intellectual Thought with Humanities-based approaches ranging from the study of sociological histories to the creative and fine arts that a unique to Black Intellectual thinkers. The successful candidate will collaborate with Xavier faculty and students as the Visiting Scholar of Black Intellectual Thought. Duties * Assist in the development of B.I.T. with Humanities-based approaches in teaching. * Coordinate and conduct faculty workshops and brown-bag discussions centered on B.I.T. * Facilitate and aid in undergraduate honors thesis research leading to publications and professional presentations. * Support initiatives sponsored by the Honors Program. * Teach two B.I. T. honors courses. * Demonstrate commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population. * Participate in service activities for the department, university, and community. Minimum Qualifications * PhD or terminal degree in Interdiciplinary Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences or related fields * Strong commitment to teaching two classes per semester, primarily centered on the teaching of Black Intellectual Thought. * Demonstrate a strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. * Ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes. * Commitment to developing an active research program within the area of Black Intellectual Thought.
