The City of Virginia Beach is recruiting for a Planning Aide I/II to join the Customer Service division for the Department of Planning & Community Development. This position will join a team of frontline customer service experts managing the front counter and initial interaction with our external stakeholders, queueing the permitting process for various trades, directing land-use inquiries regarding discretionary application inquiries (Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Commission, Environmental Boards, etc.) to appropriate Divisions, and processing in-person payments to the Department. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to: * Collect over-the-counter transactions; collect receipts and account for monies paid to the city; and prepare cash receipt reports. * Meet and greet homeowners, contractors, consultants, and staff in-person at the Department front counter. * Answer multiple phone lines having the ability to provide and interpret information regarding planning, zoning, permitting, and inspection processes and procedures along with development-related issues associated with the Development Services Center (DSC). * Assist customers visiting the Department researching properties using GIS city mapping and other city program applications. * Manage the Department's customer service queue to make sure individuals are entered into the system correctly when seeking assistance from staff. * Responsible for accepting application submittals and mail deliveries to the front counter, logging the delivery into a running spreadsheet, date stamping, organizing, and distributing to the appropriate Divisions daily. * Assist with maintaining an organized and presentable entry to the Department consisting of stocking application bins and printers, and making sure waiting areas are clean. * Aid in training seasonal/temporary employees for the Customer Service Division. * Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
