Job Summary The University of Michigan-Flint's Office of Marketing and Communications seeks a motivated and creative student to join our team. The position will gain hands-on experience with opportunities to write stories for UM-Flint News NOW (news.umflint.edu), create content for UM-Flint's official social media channels, participate in creative brainstorms and the development of communication plans for universitywide efforts, develop news stories from inception to publishing, and write copy for various campaigns. Students who wish to apply for a student writer position should be sophomores, juniors or seniors and preferably have strong interests in writing, marketing, public relations and/or advertising. Responsibilities* * Conduct interviews in order to research, write, and edit content, including daily news stories, profiles, feature stories, program information, and other items as assigned, for news.umflint.edu and university social media outlets. * Develop stories to promote and showcase the achievements of UM-Flint's faculty, staff and students, as well as large initiatives within the university landscape. * Perform other editorial assignments and projects as assigned * Assist in the distribution of content through appropriate channels, including the university's website and email newsletters. * Write media pitches as needed for various campus events and activities. Required Qualifications* Applicants must be a registered student for the academic year 2024-2025 at the University of Michigan-Flint. Desired Qualifications* * Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and creativity. * Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment. * Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. * Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, by writing and by phone. * Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding potentially sensitive information. * Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties. * Strong skill in writing in a journalistic style appropriate to various channels such as websites, newsletters, marketing collaterals, social media, etc. * Use of computers, with working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. Work Schedule Part-time, flexible hours to accommodate the student's academic schedule. Approximately 10-15 hours per week.
