Summary Objective: The purpose of this position is to supervise Police Officers on assigned shift, unit, or platoon. Investigate citizen's complaints and respond to requests for police assistance. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary. * Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals. * Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed. * Assigns personnel and equipment to a beat to ensure sufficient police protection and assigns cases to staff. * Provides technical assistance and instruction in proper police procedure & techniques, interpretation of laws, and rules of evidence. * Checks and reviews activities, reports, and evidence collected by subordinates to ensure compliance with laws, standard operating procedures and ordinances and to ensure proper description, documentation and coding. * Conducts roll call to relay laws, standard operating procedures and information from command staff and to check and inspect personnel and equipment. * Patrols the streets of an assigned area to oversee the performance of Police Officers. * Monitors police radio channels to instruct subordinate officers on how to properly apply laws and procedures in unusual and/or emergency situations. * Completes reports on investigations, employee attendance and court appearances. * Performs detective work when assigned to an investigative unit. * Makes decisions in emergency situations. * Performs related work as assigned. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: * High School Graduation or GED equivalent. * Must be a current. regular, sworn employee of the Louisville Metro Police Department. * Five (5) years of experience as a Police Officer in the Louisville Metro Police Department. * Experience requirement must be met on or before April 13, 2025. Time as a Police Recruit does not count towards meeting the 5-year experience requirement. * *Per KRS 67C.319, Candidates must have at least five years of continuous, full-time, service from the most recent date they became a Police Officer in the consolidated local government police department.  OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: * Must be vaccinated for hepatitis B, have provided evidence of immunity, or have signed a declination form within ten days of initial assignment. * Must complete forty (40) hours of annual in-service training. * Must be on 24-hour call. * Must work a varied schedule. * Must be eligible for certification as a State Peace Officer. * Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history. * Must submit to fingerprinting for criminal history check. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. * Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy. UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. Involves routine and frequent exposure to: * Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen. * Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions. * Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife. * Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors. * Traffic; Moving machinery. * Electrical shock; Heights.
