Job Title Library Specialist II (Morning/Evening/Night - 3 Openings) Agency Texas A&M University - San Antonio Department University Library Proposed Minimum Salary Commensurate Job Location San Antonio, Texas Job Type Staff Job Description The Library Specialist II is a key member of the Public Services Team responsible for overall operation of the Library's Information Desk, providing access to library materials and information about the services, spaces and policies of the University Library. Provides direction to the student workers and friendly customer service to library patrons. Contributes to the staffing and completion of tasks related to circulation, interlibrary loan, and the library's marketing and outreach. Academic year shifts for the Morning Library Specialist II start at 7:30am with the possibility of working one day each weekend. Academic year shifts for the Evening Library Specialist II last until 9pm with the possibility of working one day each weekend. Occasional schedule adjustments until midnight may be needed in the Evening Library Specialist II position. Academic year shifts for the Night Library Specialist II last until midnight with the possibility of working one day each weekend. Academic breaks may include daytime Monday-Friday shifts for all three positions. Shifts are completed onsite at the University Library. The Library Specialist II serves at the library's information desk, assisting patrons with the checkout of materials, basic to intermediate level reference and directional questions, and the use of online resources. Makes referrals to other library staff as needed and ensures that patrons follow library and university policies and procedures. Assists in processing library materials, including shelving returned items, checking in/out and packaging interlibrary loan materials. Assists in routine processing of interlibrary loan borrowing and lending requests. Assists in library outreach and marketing. Completes special projects as assigned such as assisting the library's social media coordinator, compiling statistics and updating LibGuides. Responsibilities: * Provides information and consultation services at the information desk at regularly scheduled hours each week. * Provides information and assistance in a clear and courteous manner in person and by phone, chat, email, or other means. * Uses reference interactions as opportunities to orient patrons to the range of resources available and to develop key information literacy skills. * The Morning Library Specialist II ensures adequate staffing levels are present during opening shifts and ensures the library is open on time. * The Evening and Night Library Specialist IIs ensure adequate staffing levels are present during evening shifts and onsite to close the library. * Observes and notifies supervisor of any safety, security, or other issues; implements sound judgment in resolving issues when a supervisor is not present. * Compiles public services statistics. * Assists in processing routine borrowing and lending interlibrary loan requests, including checking in/out and packaging interlibrary loan materials. * Assists in library outreach and programming efforts, including providing assistance at events and putting together monthly library displays. * May supervise and train subordinate staff and student employees. * Performs additional duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience: * High school diploma. * Three years of library or comparable experience. Preferred Education and Experience: * Bachelor's Degree in related field. * One year of library or comparable experience. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: * Basic computer skills and willingness to learn new computer systems and programs as needed. * Ability to work independently and set priorities for own work. * Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. * Knowledge of library online research databases. * Critical thinking and complex problem solving skills. * Service orientation; demonstrated exemplary manner in dealing with the public. * Ability to clearly and effectively communicate orally and in writing. * Focus and attention to detail; excellent time management. Other Requirements: * Ability to move medium weight boxes, books, heavy book truck or similar items. * Ability to work at a computer workstation for long periods of time.
